What's your favorite metal or hard rock riff?

The opening riffs to Tool's "The Grudge" and "Schism." Such genius in simplicity. The first time I heard them each, I thought, "Why didn't I think of that???"

I'm pretty simple. Some of my favorites are the the intro to "Hells Bells", "Outshined" and the obvious choice of "Enter Sandman".

Another one for me is the meaty riff that plays for about 2 minutes at the end of "Bury Me In Smoke" by Down.

To wax existential for a minute...

When does a chord progression become a riff? When does a riff become a solo?

Which came first? The rock or the rocker?

Not sure but they're all CKY. Deron Miller writes kickass riffs.

He is really something to see live, if you haven't already, you need to.
I did see them back in I think 2004, it was the show right after Vern left the band and Chad played bass that night.

I'd like to see them again but I don't think they're talking to each other right now so I dunno what's gonna happen. They better not break up, I'll be pissed! Haha.

Metallica has a lot of great openings on their songs, think of One, And Justice For All, pretty much most of their great songs have a great long ass opening

AC/DC - Back in Black
Dream Evil - Heavy Metal in the Night
Judas Priest - Some Heads are Gonna Roll
Black Sabbath - Iron Man
Megadeth - 1000 Times Goodbye
Megadeth - Disconnect
Dark Angel - Darkness Descends

To choose one, I'd go for Dream Evil's.
