The cold truth is the game was shallow... wasnt in the same league as D1 when Carmack promised a groundbreaking FPS experience... it wasnt... it was the same unorginal pile of crap that every other shooter has been for the last few years...

Battlefield 1942 was the last truely different shooter and now everyone and thier mother is copying that as well..

cant people get thier own ideas anymore?

The Engine issue fine.... if you say that the models and textures can improve in future games using the technology fine... well wait and see...
but the srceens for Q4 look EXACTLY like D3..... same crappy models same crappy textures....

Why are you even harping on this fact anyway.. all the Q3 engine games looked exactly the same too and they ALL sucked....
Q3 was fun but it wasnt the grafics that made it fun... it was a fun Multiplayer game with great maps.. nowhere as good as Quake2 but hey that was pretty great game...

As long as people keep buyign these rehashed crappy games the developers will keep rewarming them.. till we demand better titles the world of gaming will stay the same...

Sorry but being as old as I am.. I have been there done that now...
the grafics keep getting better... but the games dont...

hell the Original PONG was more fun than D3... more imaginative too.... for its time..

Yea but the point of the thread is whats your favorite fvcking map. Not what's CVSiN's history of gaming and what was the last decent fps game. Can't you tell the difference?

And you lost twice the credibility when you said that Quake3 had bad graphics now also. Now I know you are just talking out your ass. Perhaps you need to remember exactly when Quake3 came out and how many games were built off that engine.

Hard to say...Delta labs, The Digsite, both good.

And skace is entirely correct, there's a bunch of immature kids who just can't seem to avoid crapping in every Doom III thread.
I didn't like Half Life 2, but I'm not crapping in every damn HL2 thread I see.

It's also amazing how so many people are unable to accept that people have different tastes, to say someone is immature, stupid, or whatever just because they like some game just goes to prove that the poster himself is the immature one, and an asshat at that.

Sure Doom3 has its shortcomings, but the spawning issue is nothing new to this series and doesn't make the game a POS. Frustrating, yes, but not equivalent to the worst game ever made. Complaining about it has nothing to do with the subject of this thread. The same sort of thing happened in the RPG genre after the luster of Baldur's Gate had worn off. Now it's trendy to bash it.

Anyway, as with HL 1 (not playing #2 until I finish D3), my favorite level is the introduction. I love how you hear about all the strange occurances, see equipment failing, etc that let's you know something terribly bad is about to happen. In Doom 3 and HL 1 the beginning sets a great tone.

The mysterious voices are a touch I like, the most disturbing to me so far (and I'm only about half way through) was the woman saying "They stole my baby..." it was just freaky.

The other touch I liked most recently was coming up on a skeleton as I crawled through an engineering tunnel in Communications Transfer. I panicked and shot it (I'm a regular Barney Fife). Nothing happened. As I got closer it suddenly moved a bit by the hands of unseen forces. This was followed by menacing laughter as if the ghosts knew they startled me (which they had).

The dig site was probably my favorite part. The architecture and level design was fun to play and the plot kept me interested (enough) while you learned more about the ancient civilization. The waste facility was pretty cool, too, as was most of Delta Labs.

Honestly, I liked most of the levels, but I felt some dragged on a little too long

Everquest had better grafics than Q3 had at that time...
wtf are you smoking Skace.. Q3 was lame... it was the worst Quake game ever... if you remeber people hated it compred to Q1 Quakeworld and Q2...
I dont care how many games licensed the Engine... that doesnt make it good.. just means those companies were too lazy to create thier own engines..

why have I lost credibility I care less what a couple of Die hard blind ID Fanbois think..
The games are poor thier engines are less than stellar..
hell even the Unreal engine for those years was licensed to a million companies... doesnt make it a great engine either...
ID hasnt had a good game since Quake2 theya re resting on thier fat wallets writing crappy software that thier name alone will sell.

the game play and content has NOTHING to do with it's engine.

Quake III may not have been loved but it's engine was exceptional (for its time). i may not love Doom III but i respect its INCREDIBLE ENGINE. imo its potential has not been tapped - yet. A fully tweaked Doom III engine game will probably strangle r520 and i fully expect it to be the dominant engine of choice for developers for the next couple of years. . . .
. . . edit: any doubts? COMPARE Quake III with McGee's "Alice" or the later ST Voyager Elite Forces II . . . the are the SAME engine. 😛

Unreal is also a great engine . . . . it is constantly evolving between leaps . . . . look at the shadows and lighting in Thief - DS and compare them to Unreal II (there is NO comparison).

Anyway, sorry guys for the OT - but consider it a 'bump' anyway. i DID find some highlights in Doom iii that i actually liked including an entire level - Guardian. 😉

But "overall"
(on the GAME, NOT the ENGINE)
