What's your favorite free FPS?

Long story short, I had'nt played a FPS in a couple of years. I went by a friend's house last night and got totally addicted to Halo 3 in about 10 minutes, no I'm in need of a FPS fix. Any suggestions? I'm currently playing Crossfire but I'm curious what else is out there.

The demo version of Unreal Tournament 2004 has some decent maps. Last I checked (though it was a while ago), there were still servers for it up, and people playing. You could do that, or play with bots offline, which is honestly pretty fun too. And being a demo version, it's free of course.

Urban Terror and Open Arena (open source quake 3) are both great. Urban Terror has a great commmunity too with pleanty of populated servers. Both games are based on the Q3 engine but gameplay is still great.

combat arms is like a free counterstrike. It's fun, but until you can get enough points to purchase a weapon you'll just get owned to the face. I've been having fun with battlefield heroes this weekend, but it's wearing off.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
Graphics are dated now, and there's a bit of a learning curve, but it's tremendous fun.

I would say America's Army is pretty good for being free.

But even better, buy an Xbox 360 and start playing Halo 3, it's the best game out IMO.

That's beautiful. Here in the PC Gaming section, someone asks for the best free FPS, and your recommendation is to spend $250 on a console and game 😛

I would echo the comments regarding Quake Live. It's essentially Quake 3, for free, and plays through your browser.

Battlefield Heroes just went live, and though it's played in 3rd person rather than 1st person, it's quite fun as well and also free. It's definitely a more casual experience; you can get by without the hardcore twitch reflexes here.

If you're willing to plop down some cash, Team Fortress 2 is an incredibly entertaining multiplayer experience.
