What's your favorite firewall?

I have Zone Alarm Pro but it wasn't quite stable when I upgraded to XP and so I went with Tiny Personal firewall and have been pretty happy so far, but I too have been wondering what is the best out there lately

I just read that too in the magazine. I was wondering where the link would be, so thanks for that. Anyways, I personally use TPF for the same reason as robisc. I was thinking of checking out Sygate though, but I'm not sure how to test exactly to see if I'm getting hacked. But, I think I'm just okay for now.

If your using XP just enable the firewall provided, it dose a more than decent job. The number of people waiting to get into your system is just crazy these days 😱

I like the old Atguard the best because of its configurability, but it had stealthing issues. I still run it with ZA Pro which is rock solid but not as configurable. I've been eyeing that Sygate Pro with its new features, and it looks pretty good, but ZA Pro 3.0 should be out soon, so I'll wait and see first.

I`m using the Sygate firewall in Ontrack SystemSuite V4 it`s very good .

There`re quite a few to choose from but any firewall is better then none 😉.

I am using Zone Alarm Pro and just love it.

I was using XP but it kept locking up and restarting by itself. Not sure if its Zone alarm related

Not I am using Windows 2000

I used ZoneAlarm, and was quite happy with it, until I switched from Win2K to WinXP. Because of compatibility issues I switched to Sygate. That also works extremely well. In fact, I now use it on two systems in conjunction with the NAT firewall on my Linksys router.

I am using WinXP pro..and Zonealarm Pro with zero problems...

I tried Tiny firewall but did not configure it correctly and got 2 viruses that Norton thankfully quarantined...so if you use Tiny firewall which is excellent just becareful and configure it correctly...

Zonealarm for me was so easy to use ..even I could not screw it up

i guess this is just personal preference now. there appears to be no definate winner. sygate has been doing it's job. anyone think the pro version is worth the upgrade from the personal?

nealh: I should have noted that I upgraded to WinXP last August. At the time there were well-known compatibility problems with ZoneAlarm. I realize that since XP's "official" release ZoneLabs has updated their software and resolved the compatibility issues. By then I was happy with Sygate so I didn't bother to go back to ZoneAlarm. However, it was/is a great firewall.

RH Linux. I used to use ipchains, but the newer thing is iptables. Find a tutorial and it's pretty easy to set up. This will require an extra comp tho. However, I've been running my server on a P120 w/ 24 megs of RAM. It runs linux just fine and forwards packets and acts as a firewall.

On Windows, I've used ZoneAlarm, and it worked pretty well.

I love ZAlarm, but can't run it on a gateway (server) on a 2 or 3 unit LAN.
It is ok on the client machines, but will not allow the gateway to let the clients in. Maybe Pro might, haven't tried it.

Was using Norton and it is very good, just can't configure it as easy and difficult to see what it is doing. The settings aren't as meaningful (high, med,Low). difficult to find out how to set it to ask before blocking. ZA is nice about these features. Just wish it would work on the main gateway machine.
