What's Your Ethnic Background?

I thought it would be interesting to see where many of us posters' ancestors came from.

For myself, I am of Ukrainian descent and my grandparents came here to Canada in the late 1920's. They settled in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada's Capital) and couldn't read or write and didn't speak English. They eventually learned to speak English and worked whatever jobs they could get. Eventually my father and my aunt were born. Dad eventually got married and here I am.

🙂

As my pappy used to always say: There are two kinds of people in the world, the Irish, and them that just wish they were.

irish + scottish + british + german + swiss + polish + dutch

the dutch ancestors got to the new world earliest in about 1650-60

everyone was here by about 1900. a few fought in the revolutionary war

farthest ancestor i can trace back is robert the bruce of scotland, 20th great-grandpa born in 1274.

but unfortunately i'm not in line for the throne.

White Southern. Yeah, its an ethnic group for all intents and purposes. I'm mostly English with a bit of Ulster Scots and Welsh. I've traced ancestors back to arriving in Virginia in the late 1600s. Got a few that fought in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 and a lot of them in the Civil War (Confederate Army from Alabama and Mississippi). Being born and raised in California I never really gave it much thought until about a year ago. Kind of got hooked on exploring my ancestry.

Irish, English

My (Irish) mother moved in order to find employment.

Pretty much "all of the above" as long as "above" only lists European ethnicities.

Which is a pretty safe bet, since standardized testing still has tons of cultural bias.
