I am a student right now, luckily for us my mother and father have jobs that basically have gone un affected by all of this and are pretty secure. If the worst came. we would move back to mexico where we have a house and you can live off 200$ a week comfortably, oh and mexico is only 30 minutes south of us.

if you cant live off $200 a week comfortably in the US, you're doing it wrong.

er, not just wrong, you're doing it REALLY wrong.

Reading comprehension ftmfw.

I was looking at buying a house, so I have a big saved up. I would either go back to school full time, which I've been planning on doing anyway, gotta take that $250 GMAT... Or I would go around traveling for a while. I think I'm a little to chicken to just go around traveling with no plans...

I'd go flip burgers. Huge pay cut but finding another job in my field in this town is near impossible. And since we have a home that probably wouldn't sell in this market, kinda stuck here.

My primary source of income is from the government, so unless they fail, I'm alright. I'm working as a student worker right now for extra money, and that is paying off debt and going to savings.

Stop my daughters daycare and see an instant $900 a month back in our pocket. Try and collect unemployment to get some extra built up. Cancel any "extra" services - TV, music subscriptions, ect. Sell one of the cars and borrow one from my parents or buy something dirt cheap to get around if I needed to.,

It would suck, but we'd manage.

If my wife lost her job we'd be proper f'd.

I would have to turn my side hobby into a fulltime job. I recreate Friday the 13th hockey masks from each film and have been doing so for about 5 years.

I also work on other horror costumes/memorabilia. Right now it only pulls in about $1000 a month, but if I put all of my time and effort into it as a fulltime job I could easily pull in $3-$4000/monthly.

There is a lot of talk going on here in my workplace about people getting laid off soon. Hopefully that doesn't impact the IT dept b/c I'm not exactly at the top of the food chain.

Some of my work

usually a little less pay than the private sector. promotions also seem a little more political.

My wife is in healthcare and has been at the same hospital for abpout 15 years so she ain't going anywhere. I'm a trial attorney and chances are good I'll always find work even if I hang my own shingle.

sleep and play computer games all day.

shit, that sounds awesome, i should just go quit my job now. 😛

depending on how much/if I could collect unemployment or other benefits (food stamps or housing assistance?) I could probably survive for 4-6 months without a job assuming I cut way back on spending (ie: cancel cable, stop going out, stop shopping at whole foods, etc)... if I hit that 6 month mark without a job or without a job that could pay the rent, my last resort plan B would be moving back in with my parents and taking out loans to go back to school -- the one benefit of where my parents live, tons of great universities within driving distance. I could pretty easily commute to any of the manhattan colleges, not to mention rutgers or princeton in NJ.

I was unemployed from the beginning of November until the beginning of February.

The smartest thing for me to have done would have been to:

(1) File for unemployment on day 1, because it takes a long time to get rolling (FYI, I was in NJ too)
(2) Decide very quickly on where I wanted to work next
(3) Get a part-time internship at that or a similar place, while continuing to apply to the positions I wanted
(4) When unemployment started drying up, find some sort of work on the nights/weekends that allows me to pay the bills

Although this assumes a very narrow focus...

You've got to be kidding, that wouldn't even cover my mortgage payment.

I have been pondering this very question today. My company is having lay-offs today. So I am waiting to see if I am still employed. If i were to go between severence and unemployment I can get about 6-9 months. I have been dieting but I want to exercise more so I would probably start running and biking more in the morning. Then in the afternoons I would do some reading and study for some certifications. Then at night I would try and catch up watching some movies I've been wanting to see. and of course sprinkle in job search with all of this.

Pardon me, but that would barely keep you in chewing gum.
