What's your 2016 New Year's Resolutions?

Kaido

This is the first year where I haven't really had a bunch pop out to me. Usually I'm pretty gung-ho about taking on some new projects, but this year is kinda meh.

I think, as minor as it may sound, the only thing I really want to focus on is trying to go to bed earlier. I stay up way too late most nights & mush through the next day in tepid energy mode. I do pretty well on weekends when I can sleep in & make up the sleep deficit, but I go full-on dad mode during the work week.

What's on your list for the new year?

Ugh. It's that time of year when the gym gets overly-crowded with people for a week or two. Maybe three for those who are real go-getters with their 'resolution'. It never fails. I find it to be a ridiculous idea that people need to change something for the new year. I'm perfectly happy the way I live now, so why change something?

This. Arbitrary calendar dates don't influence my decisions.

TBH, I don't set New Year resolutions. I do set goals but those are done whenever I want to do something like build muscle or learn a new language.

yeah i'm not looking forward to it. thankfully i go at a pretty off time (2pm) so i'm hoping i won't have many of those people show up.

my only goal this year is to finish a major side project that i'm working on (mobile app) and hopefully turn it into a full time job.

I started working out again in august. I added running to the mix in November. I have proper outdoor winter running gear and I'd like to use it all winter and not wuss out on the treadmill. I'd like to keep up both of those and be at a decent target weight that was set in august by the start of the summer. It's doable. I have been counting calories too for almost that entire time. It's hard but it works. I hate gyms. I won't go to one. I workout outside or in my basement.

I'd like to also have another good year at work. There will be some change this year in the office and hoping everything goes well.

I want to finish Asimov's foundation series and scalzis old man's war series. Both I've started already.

Play endless legend with my wife often enough that she beats me. She is getting close!

It's stereotypical, but I really need to drop some weight. I'll probably avoid the gym and just start walking a lot more.

Somehow keep my 401k contribution % the same as it is now. A few days ago I bumped up mine by another 5% and my wife's by another 7% because taxes. A couple months ago I bumped them each by 8%, so that's a total increase of 13% / 15% from what they were at in September. I'm not an ATOT 1%-er, so we're definitely going to notice that money missing.

That's not really based on a new year's resolution so much as the tax year, but you know...

You should consider a fitbit or other smart pedometer. With that and counting calories, I lost 30 pounds in 6 months in 2014 and have continued to drop weight since, just at a slower pace.

I used to think New Year's resolutions were dumb, but I think for the large majority of people, self-introspection isn't a normal part of their routine, so it's good to have a set time to sit down & think about what you want to accomplish for the next year.

1. Lose weight. I know, cliche - but I gained ~15 from the holidays. Looking to get down to ~160. Lowest I've hit is ~165.

2. Quit drinking as often. Tonight will be the finale of a year of enjoying delicious - yet expensive - Belgian beers. Going to try to stick with some general rules of only drinking when going out (and not going out often), or if it's someone else's 😛 But seriously, I've questioned if I've become an alcoholic at times this year....

3. Max out all retirement benefits (2x ROTH IRAs, 2x 401ks). This year was close, got everything except the wife's 401. She can be stubborn. I already set my personal 401k to 60% contribution to max it out ASAP.

4. Less time on Facebook. Also phase out caffeine... It's starting to really fuck with me on how addictive it is... It doesn't help with sleep either.

5. Learn a foreign language. My wife wants me to learn her native language, and I've been stubbornly slacking in the study department.

 This is the reason I don't go to the gym.

I suppose that's a fair point. Not being one of those people, I'll keep doing what I do!

I'd like to lose some weight, but I'm not making a New Year's Resolution out of that. Too cliche.

I'm going to go with something more uplifting to achieve, like give my wife and daughter a hug every day I'm home.

I already have my goals set, so I can talk about them as if they are my news years resolutions.

1) Continue with my morning ritual. I'm getting up at 4am and so far I love it. What I do is I meditate, journal, affirmations, plan my day, tackle my most important task and go to the gym.

2) Read as much as possible. I'm talking strictly non-fiction and biographies. Books that inspire me and will make me a better person. I'm currently reading 30m a day.

3) Continue to go to the gym and eat clean. I believe that to get better in life, exercise has got to be a part of it. The same with eating. How can you feel great when you're eating fast food and treats all day?

4) Limit TV, news and Internet to an hour a day tops. I'm good with TV and news. It's going online that I need to be careful. Hours can easily pass watching You Tube videos.

5) Get a teaching job by the beginning of the next school year. I just got hired as an aide for a special needs school. I'm going to be working with children who are austistic. Hopefully, I can get on as a full time special needs teacher. Supposedly there are a few teachers who are getting ready to retire.

Well that's it.
