What's wrong with "topping off" your gas?

In Cali all the pumps have vapor recovery units so if it spills out it gets reclaimed by the pump. So you won't add to the pollution, but you'll pad the wallet of the oil companies a bit every time you top-off.

You let it click, lift the nozzle out to the top, and squeeze gently, and a little at a time, letting it settle down, until the fuel reaches the top of the filler spout. The ONLY spilling that I get when I do that is the little bit that's left between the end of the nozzle and where the valve shuts when you release the trigger about 3 inches up! :p And if you're good, then you can get that down the spout as well! No fuel down the side of the car, and you're filled right up.

Both me and my mum have done that since we both started driving, and none of our cars have ever had anything go wrong with them from doing that.
