Ever since upgrading to Win 98SE my clock (in the sys tray - lower right-hand side) is off by several hours over a period of a day. Can it be the CMOS battery dying?

that would definitely be my guess as well. i've seen it before.

new lithium batteries are available at radio shack for a couple bucks. just get the number off the face of the battery.

how old is the mobo?

Either your CMOS battery is dying, or you have a virus. Probably the first.

About 3.5 years old. Is it as simple as popping out the old and quickly popping in the new one?

you have about 20 minutes to pop in the new one after the old one is out. of course, if it takes longer, all that happens is your bios gets reset, and you might have to go in and re-configure it, no big loss. but life would most likely be easier if you can just take it out and put the new one right back in

3.5 years is not that uncommon for battery dying.

is the time correct again when you reboot? if so, it probably isn't the battery. take a look here and see if this applies to you
