What's wrong with Plextor?

I currently have a plextor 12/10/32x installed on a 1ghz amd tbird, msi k7t pro2-a with 256 mb of ram.

The problem that I am having is when i burn on 12x with a 12x cd, it burns too slow! It is suppose to finish in about 6 minutes right? Well, my cd's have been finishing in 10 min. When i burn in Nero, the Record Buffer Level/State jumps all around during the burn. It could be at 99 at one point, then a few seconds later it could dramatically drop to 13 percent or so. Your help is greatly appreciated.

oh yea, this happens when i burn data and audio cds, and i also upgraded the firmware to 1.07 because i thought that may help...but it didn't.

It sounds like your system isn't capable of keeping up with a 12x burn, so the BURNproof system is constantly stopping and restarting the burn, resulting in wildly fluctuating buffers and increased burn time.

Are you burning CD-to-CD? If so, then your CD-ROM reader isn't capable of reading at 12x. What type of CD-ROM is it? Are your original CDs dirty or scratched?

here's my system:

AMD Thunderbird 1.0 Ghz
MSI K7T Pro2-a
Elsa Gladiac Geforce GTS 32Mb
SoundBlaster Live! X-Gamer 5.1
2x 128 Mb Kingston Value PC133 RAM
Plextor 12/10/32x
Acer 50x
Maxtor 30.7 Gb
Quantum FireBall 6.4 Gb

i would think my system could keep up. This is a problem i'm having on burning files from my hd to cd, and cd to cd. I'm using PNY 12x cd's. When i burn 8x, it takes 10 minutes...which is about right...i just want to know why it isn't burning my 12x correctly.

Get a good memory management tool to up your hard disk's cache buffer, to avoid buffer underruns. I recommend MemTurbo v2.0.

i have the plextor set up as master because that is what it recommended in the manual, and then the cable runs to my slave cd rom drive (acer 50x).

dude i have the burner in a burly rig too and that happens. But I have seen this with all burning of cd's in the past. First it does some crap then lead ins, then actual burning, then lead out and table of contents blah blah blah. I think their is some crap to calculate in a burn besides the actual burning time and thats why the timer goes over a little bit.

I had 2 burners before this one and it was the same thing from backups to cdrw, etc. they all took more time in the software program to burn than just the full speed and amount of data you have to copy exactly.

If possible, place the Plextor on an IDE controller as master with no slave attached. I've had burning (not with a Plextor) problems in the past because of having the CDROM and Burner on the same IDE channel....

Good luck!

🙂

Sorry, I just noticed that your system is Full on your IDE ports.....I didn't read enough 😱

I've got my reader installed as a slave with my harddrive......but I also have 2 extra ports (if needed) in the A7V board which has 2 33/66 IDE ports and 2 ATA100 ports that can have up to 8 total IDE devices...

Again, sorry that I didn't read 😱😱😱

But, just for kicks, you could hook your reader up and unhook that 6.4G drive (if you can run your system with it unhooked) and see if the burner goes to full 12X speed?!? At least you would know...

I would invest in a promise ata 100 controller, then you can put the cdrw and cdrom on its own master. You can get the promise controller pretty cheap now.
I have mine set up this way and it burns great, although I have the TDK, alot of people say its made by Plextor.
Burns a 650meg disk in 6 minutes
