i have a 160gig sata seagate and a 250 ide maxtor. It seems that my IDE drive (used for storage) has started going REALLY slow. To transfer 4.5gigs from my ide to my sata, its taking 10+ minutes. UNRARing on my IDE drive is taking at least 3 times as long as unraring on my SATA drive. This has never happened before.

I also am having problems burning dvds from that IDE drive, but i had made a seperate thread about that before, cuz i thought it was my dvd burner, but it now looks more like my harddrive.

Could any setting have messed up? Its NTFS and im running Winxp SP2

even if you heard about maxtor's improvements, its still not safe to buy their stuff. i may have one (250gig@$70) but only to test that theory and to store more pr0n.

its a maxtor.. i dont think i can get the stuff off it fast enough.. its 200 gigs and transfering is slow as crap.

i try frag test and it says 4% total fragmentation and says i dont need it, any ideas of what it could be?

i used HD tune to test my speeds.. im getting 4.2mb/s from my IDE on avg and 99.8% cpu usage, while w/ my SATA im getting 43mb/s on avg w/ 3% cpu usage..

It has to be a setting, its a maxtor 250gb and its running in UDMA Mode 6

have you checked the transfer mode for the controller in Device Manager? Bios might say DMA 6, windows might say PIO (this happened to me)

when i reinstalled my IDEs, the transfer speeds went up to normal. I gotta figure out how to keep the DMAs the same and not have them change each time i restart... i have the same problem w/ my DVD burner....

"...Each time I restart..."
How do you have the transfer rate set in the BIOS?
