What's wrong with my Gameport? Help!

I have Monster Sound and am using the game port for my Microsoft sidewinder gamepad. I have had sporadic problems in the past where the computer does not recognize that there is a game controller connected.

Now, IT ALWAYS SAYS "GAME CONTROLLER NOT CONNECTED" and the gamepad never works.

Please help!!!!!!!!!!
