Whats wrong with my CDRW and DVD drives

I have a cendyne 52x24x52x cd/rw drive. It is the slave in my two drive configuration.
Recently when i moved back...i found that i cannot burn things properly...MP3 cd, or regular cd, or even data. The thing is firstly very slow...running below 15x speeds and takes a while, and then gives an error. I tried Roxio and the WMP software.
any ideas at all??

Side question: DVD drive has been very flaky from the beginning...its plays some DVDs, and not others. say about 20% dvds can be played and the rest just keeps reading and reading till i have to kill it.

Just frustrated with these now...any ideas whts going on?

Reading data, and installing programs from cds is fine.

Could someone have OCd your machine while you were gone? That can mess up optical drives. IAC, try clearing your CMOS and see what happens. Also add or update the ASPI layer software (DL from Adaptec or Nero, if you are using the Nero burning software - I think the Adaptec ASPI sw will work with either software - just don't have both installed).
. Also try cleaning the lenses in the drive (use a wet system cleaning disk or disassemble and clean with a manual kit) - cleanliness is next to godliness when it comes to optical drives (including LS-120 SuperDisks).

I have the machine OCed since the beginning. If that can cause anything, its probably messing with my DVD drive, since that has given me problems ever since.
I use Roxio burning...what should i d/l for that? the adaptec software for ASPI layer?
thanks
