What's wrong with LCDs?

1. They have a fluorescent backlight. Fluorescent light is horrible; it flickers, gives a nasty, harsh light, and it dims over time.

2. Ghosting; when you move around in games, even with the best panel out there, everything kind of blurs together..... blah.

3. Fixed resolution; quite annoying, especially with a widescreen (like mine).

4. Price. Self-explanatory.

5. People think they're cool because they have them. Yay; it's just a display thing.

Anyway, I am trying to get used to my laptop, which is my first LCD ever. I really like the high resolution, but... that's about it. It seems like it is already a lot darker than when I got it last fall though. Also, does anyone know if WUXGA LCDs are supposed to have poor response times, or do I just notice it a lot?

First of all, you bought a laptop, so who the heck knows what quality of an LCD you got.

Secondly, LCDs vary WIDELY in quality. If you buy a LCD monitor for a desktop system, you can go cheap or expensive or inbetween and get a wide variety of quality.

Ghosting is directly related to the quality of your LCD... you CAN get a LCD screen that has NO GHOSTING. If you go cheap and buy a cheap LCD... guess what... you'll get a LCD that ghosts. BUYER BEWARE. If you want one that doesn't ghost, you can get one, you just have to research and spend the money.

LCDs don't flicker. The technology itself makes it physically impossible.

If you bought a system with a dirt-cheap LCD, expect to get what you pay for.

Ghosting is directly tied to the response time of the LCD. What is the response time of yours? Most "common" LCD's have response times of 25ms... which will in turn GHOST. The common consensus is that you need AT LEAST a 16ms response time to not notice ghosting (though some do at 16ms, though not many)... usually at 12ms or less, even the best eyes will notice no ghosting.

I still love my LCD, has much better IQ than my old CRT, no ghosting, accurate color display, no flickering at all...

No problems whatsoever with my Dell Inpiron's 15" UltraSharp UXGA screen. It's the brightest display I've ever owned. No problems, either, with my twin 2001FP 20" monitors; I've never detected ghosting at all. (I thought I did, but it was due to blur-motion settings in NFSU.)

Your claim of flickering is bullcrap. Just about the only real drawback with LCDs is that they can look odd running non-native resolutions, but the solution's simple: buy one with your favored resolution, and use it at native.
