What's Wrong With FilePlanet?

apoppin

Lifer
i just ran across this in another thread:
Is there any way to get the patch without dealing with fileplanet? which i refuse to do

now, AFAIK, you sign up, log in [sit thru ads], wait in line till you're next and then D/L.

It's pretty simple. They have a propritary D/L manager that works if you pause it but not if you get 'cut-off' so i use LeechGet.

i never had a problem - except with huge d/ls because i am on dial-up - i even tried their premium service for a month - $6.95, although expensive will probably get me a years' worth of demos and patches. And their tech support replied right away when i tested their service.

it IS a business

So why the FP hatin'?
😕

see July 20 update

be WARNED : CANCEL your account FIVE DAYS BEFORE they automatically renew you!!!

too many hoops you have to jump though just for one measly download.

not worth the effort IMHO.

i just google for a mirror.

is that all?

i only signed up once . . . now when i need a file i just go to it and get in queue [as i am logged in automatically].

i find corrupt files from mirrors - for example most of Gamer'sHell hosting of TX2:The Metal Age are a corrupt 655MB . . . which is a real PITA if you are on dial-up. Generally, i use nVidia's site but FP has the really obscure stuff and reliable servers and files.

i just wondered if there was something "wrong" with FP . . . like RAMBUS 😛

😀

For me, it's the whole waiting in line I don't like. I always try to find an alternate site to d/l from. And I don't believe in paying for FP, etc. for a demo or patch download.

Cant be bothered signing in. Struggle to remember what my account is anyways 🙁 Besides, theres so many things already i have to sign into, it sucks.

Because you didn't used to have to wait in a damn line to get a download from them. Now they instituted a 'line policy' so they try and get people to pay them money. If they can't pay with their ads, I sure as hell am not going to help them out. I flat out refuse to use them after their 'policy' change.

1. They get exclusive deals with people (like DesertCombat back in the day, the first few weeks of World of Warcraft Open Beta, exclusive download sites for certain mods, etc.)
2. They force you to pay or wait in long lines
3. They make an inferior product (GameSpy was nothing compared to ASE before yahoo bought ASE now they both suck badly)
4. They feast on the souls of the innocent, eat babies, and they are evil
5. They will NEVER get ANY of my money

I realize it is a business BUT i hate ANY business that trys to get exclusive deals and try to force consumers to buy their services because the ONLY way to get that product is thru them.

Well, it is pretty obvious that the wait time is artificial .. . . if you have a d/l manager it resumes immediately, no matter what the wait time is.

i just doesn't bother me that web sites charge for what was free formerly. Ads pay less then before and bandwith is still expensive. . . . but then i have dial-up and am used to waiting

This is what they want to hear 🙁

That is why P2P is such a good thing. Too bad the courts do not realize this. Companies like download.com could save tons of money on bandwidth by just say.... providing a torrent for a certain file.

btw, do you work for gamespy by any chance?

I don't mind it too much, so I usually just wait in line if Fileplanet seems to be the only mirror. For patches and big demos, 3DGamers usually works well since they have a BT mirror.

nope

as long as there is an alternative, it does not bother me that they charge. AT had subscribers who were glad to pay to support "their" site. 😉

i only signed up once and am trying their service for a single month because i could not get TX2:Shadows of the Metal Age any other way . . . and i am D/L'ing everything else i am faintly interested in overnight.

i have no objection to P2P and torrents . . . just wondered if there was anything "wrong" with FP.

i guess not . . . other then they are charging and making money and limiting their ad-supported/free services

i totally agree . . . that is always how i have played it - up-'till-now . . .

however . . .sometimes there is that special file or demo that you want and you can't reliably get it anywhere else . . .

we all compromise . . . a little

😀

You can always get your file somewhere else. Searching the net > waiting in line at filepimp, imo anyway.

My hatred for FP began when my estimated time of 20 minutes was still 20 minutes an hour later. The last straw was when my account stopped working.

I found Fileshack and have stayed there ever since. Most of the time my 20 minutes wait is more like 10 minutes, I've never had to wait longer than the estimate, with the exception a few times when it said <1 minute, but even then it was little more than a minute at most.

FP can have their exclusives, I'm not signing up for them though.

FP isn't that bad. It really depends on what I'm looking to DL, chances are though if FP has it it's pretty easy to find on google, however the closed beta's are nice to get in on. I signed up for a month when the FEAR beta was closed to subscribers only(yes i wanted to try it that bad), the bandwidth is pretty good for most downloads, I don't run across too many torrents that push 2-6 MBS down. I've since cancelled my sub, I'll probably re-sub for another beta in the future.

That is one thing i hate. I see these FREE TRIAL or OPEN BETA on some games only to find out it is a gamespy subscriber exclusive. The question is.... if FP (and ones like it) did not exist, would these be open to the public rather than signed away in an exclusive FP deal.

I'd say no actually. Take the WoW beta for example - it was downloaded more than 800,000 times from fileplanet, which at 2GB per hit is enough bandwidth usage to crush several thousand smaller hosts into the ground. (It actually crushed fileplanet into the ground for a few days as well come to think of it )

Who else is going to provide that kind of availability for free ?

P2P applications such as bit torrent, like how blizzard does their patches in WoW.

FP sucks, their site is cluttered, waiting times suck, and these days you have to sign up.
Of course, whenever I want something, I'll just go to my favourite DC hub, faster and easier 🙂

Take the WoW patches for example, the Blizz downloader is ok but not great.
Getting the file off DC I get at least a steady 1 MB/Sec, so I'll have the file in no time.

Oh i do hate FP with a passion.

First off..Their site just sucks. Its full of crap and is not very well designed. It has just too much stuff going on. FP and Gamespy are just too huge and they try to cover everything.

Secondly I hate waiting in line. Even things that are so old that you have to be 1 of myabe 2 people downloading it have a 30 min wait. They have to be making that longer just so you pay them for the premium service.

And lastly gamespy. WHen i played games back in the day it was on programs called "HEAT" and another one that i cant remember but was all red. They had rooms where you could join games..talk..and was just great. Avatars..friends..and everything. Then Gamespy came a long and took them all out.

FP wouldn't be so bad if the interface wasn't so horrible designed, and had way too many flash adds and general crap that slows down your web browsers. They are trying to cram too much crap into too little space. They aren't that horrible you just find another site during peak usage. They usually have a lot of old stuff and patches for older games that you would have to hunt for on your own.
