What's worse, popups or promoted content thumbnails?

What's the lesser of two evils? With popups, you may have the opportunity to view a content free webpage. With thumbnails, you don't get annoying popups, but you will almost never view a content free webpage.

I hate them both.

Those annoying pop ups that show up a couple seconds after you loaded the paged, blocking you from seeing the sentence you were just reading. Worse are the ones that try and guilt trip you for using ad blocking software.

Both are annoying, but pop-ups are exponentially worse than thumbnails.

I remember Myspace had the left and or right sides of the page filled with ad columns that were VERY distracting and noisy.

This is the best comparison I can find of them:

Those delayed reaction popups are definitely the worst. Doubly so on a phone because I very often go to scroll a bit when it comes up and I "click" it. So then they got click-through credit leading one to believe that these fucking ads are working so they do them even more.

PECKER HEADS 😡😡😡

What's worse is "Click here for this story" then 90% full of ads, 10% content and 20 "Next" clicks to get through everything.

I think I most hate those fucking popup/overlays when you inadvertently mouseover a sponsored/keyword link.

I guess what is even worse is the overlay ads that come up on pages....and the element you have to click to close it is not even visible on a mobile devices.

What's worst is a site that redirects you to a "enable JavaScript" page if you use NoScript. Like TigerDirect.

As long as a pop-up isn't a new window - which is really annoying but is blocked by most browsers now - I can hide it with Stylish and get on with things. But I guess pop-ups are still slightly more annoying.
