What's with this new FB trend of putting stuff in an image?

Well it's been around for a while, but there's a new version of it. I'm not talking about the inspirational quotes crap or memes, but just normal posts. Like someone will ask a question or something, but instead of just typing it out normal they put it inside a colored background image. Why?

People are weird.

Ok, so maybe I just answered my own question.

Yes, you answered your own question.

Also it's facebook, so if there's a way to do something that is annoying, doesn't make sense, or is just plain wrong, they will find it and use it there.

It's a new facebook feature. Your 1-2 lines of plain text is going to be ignored, so facebook allows you to give it a sweet colored background and huge font.
I'm not sure it's a background image; it's just a CSS gradient AFAIK.

It's not like they are firing up GiMP and making a .png.

do they not think it will be searchable?

there was a thread here a while back about a news story and someone claiming to be a part of it commented using text in an image

Hmmm maybe, but I'll have to check next time, maybe it is some kind of CSS trick and not actually an image. Like facebook bb code or something?
