I just found out that I was an emo fan without knowing it... where did this genre come from? What is an emo sweater? What are some popular emo bands?

I was wondering what the heck emo was so.............

short for "emotional." Emo is a broad title that covers a lot of different styles of emotionally-charged punk rock. This site is intended to introduce the reader to all the common styles, describe them musically, and give ideas about the essential records of all those styles. You will be an expert in emo, in the broad sense, after reading this website.

Personally I don't really kow the names of any bands but I do loves me the music when I hear it :D

Cheers,
Aquaman

Emo is some sort of genre of music that came out of nowhere...

What is Emo

I was chatting with someone on the net, and after showing my band list, they thought I was a big emo fan! Hard to be a fan of a genre if you don't know what it is :p

Hot Water Music
Small Brown Bike
Saves the Day
Yellowcard
Dashboard Confessional
Alkaline Trio (not quite emo, but close)
Thursday

That's all I can think of a the moment. The only ones I like are Alkaline Trio, Saves the Day, Thursday and Yellowcard; the last two of which I've seen live.

Emo?

What is it with sub-genres. Rock is rock. :)

If you've ever heard of a band called "Taking Back Sunday" then you've heard some emo.

Every time I see "emo" it makes me want to giggle. :D

For a moment there I thought of Emo Phillips, the comedian, on seeing the title of this thread. That guy is almost as good as Steven Wright at quotes:

"When I wake up in the morning, I just can't get started until I've had that first, piping hot pot of coffee. Oh, I've tried other enemas..."

"I was at a bar nursing a beer. My nipple was getting quite soggy."

"My ex-girlfriend was very sexy. She reminded me of the Sphinx because she was very mysterious and eternal and solid ... and her nose was shot off by French soldiers. The list went on and on. She's very beautiful. She has a heart-shaped face -- not like a Valentine's heart, but like a real heart, with the veins and the arteries..."

The Ataris aren't emo.

Actually the whole term is stupid. Emo as a sub-genre is basically pop punk that isn't energetic.. and tries to be emotional by going on for much too long how much it sucked when a girl broke up with the singer. Dashboard Confessional is a good example, and is currently the #1 MTV Megahit of the week. Weezer has a lot of songs that fall into the emo category, but thankfully most of those are done so well I can enjoy them.

Too whiny for me. I like my music happy, energetic, and not whiny.

I agree...

Which sentence is correct?

1 - SerraYX does not like some emo bands.

or

2 - SerraYX does not like some bands that are labeled emo.

ever heard of math rock? I found out I am a fan of that too!

I would hope most music is emotional.

I personally can't stand bands such as dashboard confessional.

AFI and Goldfinger for me.

what i think is dumb is that emo's been around for years but now it's mainstream, which kinda takes away from it as a genre in the first place. i hate when that happens (not that i liked emo that much to begin with...)

Wow.. that site is pretty informative and nostalgic (for me)

I was in the "emo scene" in the early to mid 90's

Some great bands from that time..

Indian Summer
Moss Icon
Heroin
Antioch Arrow
Unwound

I'd say present day emo bands are more like indie rock than emo hardcore

Real "emocore" pretty much died in the mid-late 90's went bands went commercial
and it bacame just another "cutting edge" genre for people like MTV to exploit
(Dashboard Confessional, Thursday, Jimmy Eat World, etc..)
