What's with the big rush to replace AGP with PCI Express?

Looking at the chipset roadmaps, it looks like a lot of manufacturers are planning to totally get rid of AGP slots by the end of '04. Why the big rush? AGP slots today (8X) aren't even coming close to becoming a bottleneck in video performance. Why don't they just use 1 AGP slot (8x), 1 PCI Express (16x) and the rest as PCI Express (4x)? Then people could still use their AGP card today and replace it with a PCI Express model when they decide to upgrade.

It looks like VIA is going to offer just that. But for some reason SiS and Intel are ditching AGP. Not sure about Nvidia

Because they hate you.

It's all self serving. they want all of the 9800 owners and 59X0 owners to go buy new stuff... duh...

AGP _and_ PCI-Express will be a tad hard to do on the same mainboard because (a) both these busses use a lot of pins and (b) both are rather delicate to layout.
