For any even marginally alternative social movement which gets a bit of press there's a vocal opposition who will not just let people enjoy their freedom of choice.
What is wrong with people, just shut up.
Regarding the homeschooling oppositon, education is a HUGE stronghold in the western society.
I think it boils down to the "outsourcing" model of life. We outsource our health to our doctors, being compassionate to the government, educating our children to public schools, making our yard look nice to Jose's Yard Service, etc. That isn't always bad, as in doctors have highly specific skills and Jose's Yard Service can do the job more economically than you can. For whatever reason, those who received the outsourcing for educating our kids (teachers, professors, administrators, etc) think they are the most wonderful, self-sacrifical Jesus figures on earth who are highly skilled at imparting massive amounts of knowledge and wisdom to our children....theres just this whole culture of elitism and pride that the general public has bought hook-like-and-sinker, so anything that challenges that traditional model is of the devil or something.
Most, if not all parents who are even remotely dedicated, can potty train their children, which means they are equipped to teach. Anyone who graduated high school and became a parent should not have any trouble teaching their own child through at least sixth grade (from awareness of the world around them, arithmetic, basic reading/writing, etc). I'm not saying homeschooling is for everybody, I just think the traditional education model and everyone who supports it to the death needs to get over itself. Most of the stereotypes that come with homeschooling are grossly exaggerated.
