Put up a picture of a perfect circle. You will see it does not "fit" better, but is, in fact, distorted. Everything is slightly short and squat on a CRT at 1280x1024. The proper resolution is 1280x960.

Just because you're used to that short and squat look doesn't make it correct.

Try this image, and measure it both vertically and horizontally. On my monitor it is an exact circle. On your's, it will be longer than it is tall.

And it already has been pointed out that LCDs with a native resolution of 1280x1024 are 5:4, not 4:3 like most CRTs. In your case, 1280x1024 IS the correct resolution.

I measured that circle and came up with an oval at 1280 x 1024 (which is what I normally use). Then I switched to 1280 x 960 and came up with an oval (plus the screen had huge left and right "margins"). So I adjusted my monitor settings to make the screen take up the whole tube, and measured the circle again and it really was a circle. Thanks!

First off, what kind and make of monitor do you have?

Samsung 955DF-T/T.... Three of them side by side

OK, do you stretch the picture using the monitor controls to fit the edges on the monitor exactly in both the 1280x1024 and 1280x960 resolutions?

it's such a pain to do all of those adjustments, that once I got it at 1280x1024, I left it on all three.

Perfect circle on my 23" lcd @ 1920x1200.

I use to ru n 1280x1024 on my 19" CRT as it was the largest res my eyes could take.

OK, well do it on all three at 1280x960. I promise that geometrically, your picture will be correct at that resolution. Because that circle I posted is a perfect circle when viewed on a monitor at a correct resolution for it's shape.

Wow.

I used to go to LAN parties and was amazed at some of the resolutions some people were running. So high you could barely make out the text - you had to squint to read it. I believe it was mostly people just showing off their monitors.

I run 1280x960 on my 22" CRT and that's as high as I will go. 1600x1200 is out of the question.

i'm using 2560x1024

Well the 23" makes 1920x1200 very good. Just the same or even bigger then 1280x1024 on my 19" crt but viewable is 18" th ough. But yeah some people have crazy res and you can't see ah heck all.

Me I get a comfortable 100dpi though on my screen. Everything looks great. Would be nice to have another one though :p but that would just be crazy.
