What's with the 1280x1024 resolution?

All the other ones, like 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 is a 4x3 ratio, 1280x1024 is 5x4. Why? It should be 1280x960.

Not everyone is using a standard size screen..for example, you can set up a projector to display in different ratios.

I actually heard that 1280x960 is better than 1280x1024? Can anyone confirm this? If yes, why?

It's been said on the boards here that Apple started that with their displays that actually had a 5x4 screen.

1280x960 is better on normal CRTs. But LCDs with a native resolution of 1280x1024 should be set at just that.

I like 1280x1024, I got used to it. I've noticed quite a few (usually the low end) 17" monitors having 1280x1024 as their max.

Well, the way to tell is put up a picture of a circle. If it's round, it's right. Most LCDs with 1280x1024 are 5:4. Most CRTs are 4:3

You guys say this, but we'd still like to hear why 1280x1024 on a CRT doesn't work as well.

Are you also saying 17/19" LCDs are physically more square than 4:3 AR CRTs?

Measure your CRT's screen. Its 4:3. The image has to be squeezed to become 5:4, and looks messed up. Youre just used to it. 1280x960 will give you the proper aspect ratio of your physical monitor.

But most 17-19 inch LCDs are actually 5:4 themselves, so that resolution will be the only perfect fit. All other resolutions are off, such as 6x4 and 8x6...

I have no idea how it originated, but I think it had something to do with the high resolution screens that CAD users were using.
