I've noticed the same thing about a lot of my Asian friends, and you know stereotypes come from somewhere... To be fair, it's the Asians from the area I went to high school that I've noticed exhibit this greed. They are ALL premed except for one guy who is business. None of them give a damn about anything except themselves. I asked one of them what he thought about sweatshops in Asia and he just acted goofy, you know, the typical Asian American goofy attitude.

Do elaborate.

What is this typical Asian Amercian goofy attitude you speak of ?
Cuz I'm asian and I have no clue wtf you're talking about.

Maybe it's local? Or maybe you guys need more Asian friends because you're getting whitewashed! it's kiind of like white frat guy goofiness but less obnoxious. They'll make a joke about everything, and do things like form caterpillars with their bodies, hit on each other, and make fun of Asianness.

So that makes it ok for white frat guys to be goofy? or do you just have absolutely no sense of humor? ...

Being more obnoxious makes it okay for white frat boys to be goofy?

I have a fine sense of humor, but how many times is it funny to grab your friend's ass and tell him how hot he is?

you officially have some friends with issues then because none of the asians i know are like that lol.

Thank god I have no money so I haven't been brain washed in such a way that I think people who make less than me are inferior.

Actually I think white folk seem to be the greediest. (no negative racial stereotyping intended but just my observation)

they also seem to have the most money.

My parents are the same way. They wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer and cut off my tuition when i signed up for mechanical engineering/Aeronautical Engineering and ROTC(mainly for ROTC). luckily, I got an ROTC scholarship and I went to an in-state college.

We aren't that greeddy. We're CHEAP.

I change phones every year because I want my free phones (good ones too at Asian stores).
With a certain group of friends, we share drinks at fast food places.... iono I feel too cheap sometimes.
I gas up in the morning for max gas density. When I'm done pumping I lift the tube up to get the last few drops into my gas tank.
I used to speed, but now I cruise control 70 to save gas. A few seconds more doesn't make a diff for me on my short commute anyways.
No AC in the car unless its blasting hot.. always roll down windows.
Calling cards. Who the hell signs up for long distance calling plans. If you don't use calling cards you should be shot.

If you want to talk abou the Asian stereotype of being premed or prelaw or engineers, its because our parents push us. I mean if I looked around my high school, to be honest, many of us Asians don't lead "lives" and it's the white people having all the fun. That said, I still look back and said I had my share of fun in HS. Sure it may not have been the best balance between nerdage and fun, but we did have our moments.

My parents were engineers. They see me as one too, so I guess it works. However they kinda wanted me to b ea doctor, although I never really got pressure there. My relatives have talked to me about becoming a doctor, but I exhibit less interest in bio or chem.....

Nitpicking won't win me points, but a few things...

Fast food is never a cheap alternative, it's actually one of the more expensive ways to eat. After a certain speed, having the windows rolled down will cost more money than air conditioning because of DRAG (use more gas to go the same speed due to increased airflow into the car).

I completely agree about being pushed too much, that's what I find happens. It may be good for ending up productive and wealthy, but doesn't always lead to real happiness... 🙁

Your parents sound like retards if they think that Engineering is an inferior profession. for making your way through.

Fast food because where else do friends eat? Sitting down at a restaurant will cost us more. No, the 7 or 8 of us won't cook for each other either. Hell we don't cook. Either fast food or eat at home with parents =P.

obviously, you're only cheap when it counts judging by your rig 🙂

Personally, my parents have always pushed me into the medical direction. Doctor, dentist, pharmacist ... something in that direction due to the money and supposed "prestige" it brings the family (asian thing I guess).

Because I chose to go a different route (IT), they've refused to help support me, in fact when I had told them that I got a job in WA (I live in CA) as a jr net admin, they told me to not go and instead stay here and continue to go to school to become a doctor -- and they would pay for everything so long as I do that.

A lot of the "old world" asians believe that the only jobs worth having are in the medical field, and anything less is disgracing/embarressing.

But hey ... that's the way a lot of us are raised ... with that belief. The sad thing is, a lot of us don't change our way in thinking even when all grown up because it's all we've ever known.
