What's with SOME Asians and money?

I had a friend (I cut off contact because he was being a jerk) that grew up helping his parents run their Chinese restaurant. I'm sure money was tight through college.

He is now a Pharmacist making ~$90K. He would always criticize people we went to high school with for going to college and getting advanced degrees, but going into teaching, civil service or other relatively low-paying professions. He thought they were wasting the time they spent in school just because they don't make a big paycheck.

Another example: we would discuss the OJ case and he would say that Henry Lee is the better authority on whether forensic evidence is reliable because he makes millions of dollars. A police detective isn't to be believed over him because they make '$40 or $50K.'

What kind of elitist bullsh!t is this? He is not the only Asian with these attitudes, I have sensed them in many others that I have met.

EDIT: I don't want to stereotype every Asian, so I changed the title of the thread. I apologize.

That's not greed. That's the byproduct of growing up in an environment where your parents constantly pressure you to overachieve and succeed to the max fiscally so you don't have to go throught what they went through. It's common to many immigrant households, not just Asian. I know b/c I'm an immigrant and a lot of people I know that are are the same way.

I dunno, most of my relatives make good money but dump it in the bank, which doesn't make much sense to me...

heh i've got a cousin who's 28 and he doesn't have a license or car because he's too cheap to pay for insurance.

Perfect answer. It's all true too in most cases.

No, I'm just trying to find out why certain people have these attitudes.

i hope you have enough sense to realize that "why are all <insert race here>'s <insert attribute here>?" threads are usually flamebait?

Agreed. What the OP posted is the biggest stereotype I have read in a long time. I grew up from the same kind of background and worked my ass off to get where I am now. Going through a poverty-stricken childhood is no fun and if you haven't experienced it then please don't talk... Lets face it, some have it easier in life and some don't. Just because your friend is making a healthy living now and trying to enjoy life doesn't make him a jerk nor does it give you the right to generalize all Asians. Maybe it is just him, but don't pin it on the entire race.

lol @ topic.

I do agree that Asians and Indians tend to be extremely miserly. No excess spending, no extravagant belongings, even no vacations if it can be helped. That's a far cry from saying "all" of them are this way though.

Im a greedy bastard. If i earned 90k a year id be happy to remind everyone of that fact regularly 😀 So i can understand your former friend a bit. But some people just grew up *wanting* to teach or w/e theyre not in it for the money, he really should understand that some people just enjoy their job.

You're right. I was just mad about the falling out I had with my friend. The responses I've read so far make sense, but that doesn't make them right.

and it has nothing to do with being Asian. there are plenty of people of different races who share the jerk-friend's ignorant perspectives.

Mods please lock if you find this offensive:

Most Asian people are cheap. Its what I've noticed throughout my life.

That was severely shallow of you to label about what, 2 billion people as greedy? Jesus, use your head before slinging around comments like that.

Ok Ok, I will change the title of the topic.

Your friend is an idiot. He may figure it out one day though, you never know.

understandable. could this be something that you and your friend just agree to disagree with, and remain friends? i have some friends (also asian) who disagree with my perspectives on success, money, and happiness and how they are tied together. we just agree that we don't share the same opinions on that issue.

simple equation really: more $ = better than

j/k

i know plenty of asians doctors that work in county hospitals (low paying). stop generalizing.
