I've got an old laptop type system that I just learned can take 2x 4GB PC2-6400 instead of the original shipped limit of 2x 2GB laptop simms, but OUCH, prices a bit on the high side. I guess 4GB simms in DDR2 weren't very common.

Whenever a new memory standard is created, production of the previous standard is reduced, eventually falling to nothing, but demand doesn't fall to nothing, leading to high prices.
