A week ago I check on new memory for my new (in progress) system. This week the price has jumped $30! What's up with that?!! Is this a trend for the near future or does anyone have any knowledge of future pricing? Rant, rant, rant!

I'm assuming you are referring to rising DDR SDRAM prices.... IMO, the prices will continue around their current levels for a long while. Why? 1 word... collusion. :Q

Of course, I'm looking at Corsair XMS2700, but $30 in a week??! My motherboard will be cheaper than one stick of memory at the current prices. And this thirty dollar jump is for both the 256mb & 512mb. Grumble, grumble... I was hoping to buy the memory next... and this leap in prices is to be expected to stay around for sometime?! Of course this has to take effect as soon as I am looking to buy ram...

I was thinking about buying a stick of 512mb, but I heard that performance works better with 2 sticks of 256. Why is that? Thanks for any help guys! :)

Wow. You ain't kidding.

About 3 weeks ago, I upgraded a couple of parts on my PC, memory included. I remember looking a Newegg's ram, so I just went back to see for myself, about what you were saying regarding memory prices.

They have gone up a LOT!

I didn't buy from them ( got 512 megs Samsung for $106 at a computer show), but after seeing those prices on memory now, it looks like a picked the right time to upgrade. Another week or 2, and I'd have been paying a 30-40 dollar premium.

I'm considering myself lucky.

Memory prices are part of the reason I decided to stick with my SDR memory platform - Celeron Tualatin to upgrade. That and power supply.

It is notable that during past years, memory prices have steadily decreased while the size has increased. For the last year or more, memory prices have either remained constant, or increased. I think eventually the old trend will take over, but how long will it take?
