lol... I really like the joggers (usually 3 or more guys with their shirts off) that run through the very smack center of Turlington Plaza here at UF during class changes.

"How about all 3 of us run together with our shirts off in a crowded plaza to pick up chicks? We won't look gay."

Sometimes the sidewalk is uneven/cracked, and there is a better chance of hurting yourself through tripping or running on an uneven surface.

The real reason is that running on concrete is bad for your joints because it's so hard, so joggers run on the street where the asphalt is (in relative terms) much softer

Envisions Ace and Gary the ambiguous duo from the Saturday Night Live skit....:)

They should get softer shoes then.. because I'm seriously going to hit one of them one day.. and not on purpose :(

I saw a guy running on the wrong side of the road. Sidewalk was there on both sides too. That was quite annoying. But not as annoying as his flour. pink shorts and wacky hair.

As far as comfort... vs. idiot drivers if I was a jogger I'd take my chances w/ the concrete OR run in the grass and get a better workout (while risking ankle injuries, and dog mines, but, hey--at least it'd be a bit more interesting.)

As a sometimes runner I agree: concrete is MUCH harder, I prefer dodging cars to destroying my knees.

Plus keeps you on your toes....

Thanks for the info. I found it an interesting read and hadn't given much thought to it before.

At least personally, I can't stand running on a treadmill. I don't like running in the first place, and the treadmill is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to boring (besides costing money plus space).

America is filled with overweight lard assess (I'd question your own weight) and you want to bitch about people jogging?

Ayup...plus, streets (at least in the subdivisions here around me) are rather wide. If there's enough room for cars parked along a curb and for traffic, there's enough room for bikers, bladers, and joggers.

Well pedestrians have a right to use the road....sidewalk is for walking really anyways.

Asphalt is like a pillow versus sleeping on a hardwood floor compared to concrete. When I was running 15-25miles a week or more, 3 days on concrete left me in pain. Shoes cannot cushion you enough without loosing footing.

as mentioned, yes, it is because the asphalt for the road is much softer than the concrete for sidewalks. Still, I run on sidealks whenever they exist, because as you have seen, running on the road is not always the safest thing to do. And getting softer shoes is not a good idea. I need firm shoes or else my knees give me trouble.

You're supposed to do that, as a general safety rule. This way you can see stuff coming at you and have some warning, instead of suddenly being plowed over from behind by an errant car. ;)
