Seriously, it's my own damn last name too. I've never though to wonder why we Vietnamese are so unoriginal.

Last name can be derived from a clan or a son of whom, and in some cultures the father first or middle name become the last name for the son. And, some cultures give their son such as Bob Sr., Jr. & so on.

In the Vietnamese case, prior to the Chinese colonization of Vietnam many if not most Vietnamese don?t have a last name due to culture. (The Vietnamese highland naming schemes still mostly only first name).

During the Chinese occupation of Vietnam many families, governments, kings, lords, and emperors changes hand rapidly, which lead to the adaptation of last name. Last name were use like the other cultures that describe a family or belong to a clan (associate with rank/wealth), therefore the people that belong the certain clan could collect taxes/wealth.

The reason a large portion of Vietnamese has Nguyen as a last name is because this group of people stands in power many times. And, anyone that has done any deeds or friendly to this family would earn point from the family/clan/king/lord/emperor, therefore were given the authority to change/take on the master family name as his/her own.

The above doesn't mean that my theory is bullet prove, but the little that I have read point me to this conclusion.

Yep.

What is the etymology of the name? Does it correspond to someone famous, a place, an occupation? Is there a significant historical event associated with this name?
Vietnamese claim that Nguyen is a originall Vietnamese name that link to many great kings & emperors, but the fact is that the name could be given adopted by the Vietnamese during the Chinese 900 years colonization. There are many Chinese name that have the same sounding as Nguyen, but you will not find a Vietnamese that admit to it that they are Chinese or their name is Chinese.

Well certainly a lot of them do have that name but I have come across a few with other names that are spelled similar to that.

That girl looks at least 16, but in some Vietnamese case she could be close to 30 years old.
I'm 35 years old and people around me think that I look like a 22~23 years old. What worst is being hit on by high school girls that think that I look like a 18~19 years old guy.

searching around i found this

In Vietnamese, the surname Ruan is known as Nguyen, which is the most popular family name. Although not all Vietnamese who bear this family name can trace their roots back to their Chinese ancestors, Nguyen is clearly a Chinese name. Many Vietnamese with this surname claim their ancestor to be a man called Ruan Cho, who was a governor of ChiaoChih (North Vietnam) during the Chen Dynasty (~600 A.D.). (Ruan means a musical instrument)

Yeah seriously. Didn't mean to make this thread racist or anything, my friend just asked me this and I was disappointed that I didn't know..

Hahaha, this is not true...

you gotta believe it. where i live, i checked in the yearbook index. our school has a very small population of 2000 people and 3.5 complete lines going down were all nguyens. it was crazy. there wasnt a single other last name even close to the sheer magnitude the nguyens possessed.

whats even stranger is that there are some people with quite generic names, like Justin Nguyen. In our school, there were 3 people believe it or not with that name. and they would call them to the office by saying "justin nguyen 2" or "justin nguyen 1".
