The pantyhose as sleeves explains alot...

They are just fvcked in the head and Cutting has replaced Goth as the new in thing...can't wait until Castration is the new In thing so we cam eliminate all this refuse from the Gene pool

It's been around a long time, but it seems like there is now "trendy" cutters who do it (or perhaps even just CLAIM to do it) becuase it fits in with this whole goth/teen angst/16-year-old attention whore image that they are trying to portray.

Case-in-point, a younger friend of mine (freshman in college) was dating an even younger girl (sophomore in HS) and she is just like this. Every action she does seems to be a carefully planned cry for attention, and the invention of the "blog" gives these whackos a great outlet where they act screwed up and everybody reads it and then pours out their sympathy.

So in her blog she claims she's a "cutter." She says she thinks she is a lesbian. Seems like that's trendy among this set, too. Her parents hate her. Her siblings hate her. She hates herself. She tried to commit suicide by taking 2 advil with a shot of vodka.

And everyone is like "OH WE LOVE YOU, WE FEEL SO BAD FOR YOU," etc.

I'd bet that 75% of those kids that claim to be "cutters" have never intentionally cut themselves more than once, if at all.

An ex of mine was a cutter before we were together, she has big scars from it. She tried to explain it to me....you basically see all of your anger and pain pouring out of the cuts....its fvcking disgusting, and its not normal and healthy no matter what they think.

I thought cutting and even vomitting was about control. They don't have control in their lives, but through cutting, vommiting etc.. they gain a measure of control in their lives?

I know someone who was in my High School class who has this problem. I occassionally see him at our local pub and he is always wearing long sleeves but if you look you can still see much of the scar tissue.

Crazy, Crazy, Kids!!!!

It's the latest, greatest form of flagellation. Me, I prefer the original: a few strokes from a short, studded whip to the back. A few salted gauze strips and a clean shirt afterwards and I'm good to go.

Cutting stems from a need for control, or at least if I remember my Psychology classes correctly. It's something they can do that no one can take away. Probably similar to what drives an annorexic.

I've known about cutters for 10 years now, and I'm pushing 26. It's nothing new, but maybe it's gotten on TV. I'm sure it's prevalent and there are studies about it. It'll be like any other fad; there will be fakers who hop on and do it cuz it's different, but there will always be those who do it for the true reasons, whatever those may be.

That sounds more like body modding. Those people remind me how nice birth control is.

I call it a cry for attention, nothing that a military school and some discipline won't fix. Mental Illness is when you hear people and/or have to wear a straight jacket.

2 people have got it right. While it can be seen as a cry of attention it is more about controlling one's pain. I know it is hard for some people to understand and is easy to dismiss but it can be dangerous. When I was in HS I counseled a cutter. Her mom was an alcky and her dad had moved out because of it. So, at home it was just her (16yrs old) and her younger sister and her alky mother. I know this sounds weird but she literally thought that all the things that were happening were her fault. How could someone 16yrs old handle that much pain and responsibility even if it was just imagined ? It was a very had thing for me to do since I was only 17 and was thinking WTF.

(things did get better for her though)

My Ex was a cutter and a half. She said that she didn't know why she did it, but she couldn't help it. Those weren't good times.

I can see how cutting can be pathological if it was done for the wrong reason (e.g. Psychological problems), but cutting for the fun and experience . . . hmm, I can buy that. IIRC, there are some cultures in Africa where the people would rub ashes into self-inflicted wounds to create body art. Let me go find a link. BRB.

edit: Here's a pic.. It shows the back of a girl with decorative scars.

That movie is more about the relationship between a submissive female and a dominate male in a sadomasocistic relationship. It draws insight on how the female will tolerate such "abuse", and what kind of personality it takes to become a submissive or a dominate.

And yes, the main girl was a cutter.

"bloggers" are making the phenomenon more popular. At least the female ones. They fit maddox's camwhore perfectly. They write bad poetry, use webcams and put on sad expressions. And the cliche is that they will self-diagnose themselves with some sort of mental disorder because it is "cool". Commonly self-diagnosed problems include: depression (so passe!) , anxiety, shizophrenia (this one is the pop one right now), eating disorders, narcolepsy etc. Usually they like to mix a couple of them together and then wallow in self-pity.
