What's with all the remakes?

Almost two years after release it seems a really good chunk (if not most) of the games I'm seeing slated to come out are remakes of old games. I get they're cheaper to make as it's mostly just porting the same code, but some of these games were just released a couple of years ago. I would have thought at this point we'd have more releases that were originality (at least a new squeal that wasn't just a map pack) and not the exact same game at a new res. Are we at the point where games cost way too much to make that we're going to get less of them? Is this predicting the future trends where we'll be remaking games over and over again or be the casual type?

Like it or not, consumers are predictable and remakes are generally less risky than original content. Combine that with high development cost and you see what we have, which is a ton of remakes both in both games and films.

stop buying them and they will stop making them. i refuse to give developers for remakes. if i wanted to play the game i would have played it on the console it came out on when it came out.

i have purchased an hd remake though, however i purchased them used so the devs got no money from me. it was the god of war 1 and 2 for ps3 cause i never played them on ps2.

It's probably a combination of things and every response is probably right. It's a quick buck, it's less risky, games are expensive to make, and people are buying them. I think part of the reason we see so many on PS4 is because it is selling so well. A good chunk of the market for PS4 may not have had a PS3 because they were Xbox 360 gamers instead. It's easy to sell them gems from the PS3 that they didn't get to play. Uncharted, Last of Us, God of War etc. Great games that we have played but perhaps many PS4 owners did not and would like to since they missed them.

I've expressed my distaste for this trend in other threads, especially in regards to the newly revised systems being rumored about. I'm hesitant to plop another $400 down because all I've gotten for my original purchase seems to be remakes or the yearly releases(sports, CoD, Assassin's Creed). There have been too few original ideas that were any good. A few great titles mixed in with disappointments, yearly releases, and remakes is what I feel this generation was comprised of. I've seen no indication that there will be any change if I decide to give them more money for the revised console either. They have had 3 years, and many developers began working on games before then. I feel that 4 years is plenty of time to get a great game out to us.

That's a touch hypocritical.

Remakes have their place, but not the way they're being handled currently.

oh i know it is. that's the only one i ever did though, and it was also before 50% of games were being remade.

if i remember correctly, the gow collection was one of the first "hd remake" types of collections and it was released well after the PS3 was out, in preparation of gow3 coming out.

it's not like how the last of us came out at the very end of the ps3 life span, and the hd remake was out within the first few months of ps4 release (exaggerating a bit in here probably, don't remember the exact dates).

I bought the Uncharted collection and The Last of Us remastered edition for the PS4 because I love those games but wasn't going to keep my PS3 after I bought my PS4. I actually would love a remake of inFamous 1 and 2 for the PS4. :)

Lol now there is a rumor that they will announce a skyrim remake at e3.

Well, Bethesda basically got Skyrim working on PS4 and XBO when they were porting their engine over to the new machines for Fallout 4, so Skyrim getting a release was less of a question of if, but when....

If mod support is included, it could be interesting. I have a lot of time into the PC version of Skyrim already though, so it wouldn't offer anything new for me personally tho.

Well, basically for anyone who had it on PC you could mod it almost infinitely and most did so there's no point to a remake for them and many of those mods wouldn't run on a PS4 or XB1. I just thought it funny that we're talking about there being too many remakes and here's another one coming.

I'm sick of it.

I bought the Halo Master Chief Collection for the single player campaigns. I think I paid like $30 for a new/sealed copy on ebay. I had never played 4, and playing through CE, 2, and 3 again was fun. These games have actually held up pretty well. I even picked up the ODST DLC after finishing everything on the disk.

If Gears of War Remastered included all three main games I would probably get it too, but it only includes the first one.

If I ever pick up a "PS4 Neo", The Last of Us and the Uncharted collection would be at the top of my list of games to get. I haven't owned a PS in over a decade, and I'd love to play these games.
