I have been using AVG Free Edition and today I see a message "AVG 7.5 Free Edition is Ending...updgrade to 8.0"

I read somewhere that 8.0 was only free for a short period. Then it had to be upgraded to paid.

Is there another free antivirus program I can go to that works like AVG?

TIA,
Jeff

i was wondering what was the deal with the constant reboots. i put up with them for about 2 weeks, then i installed AntiVir. AVG 8 is too heavy for my taste. now i have AntiVir in 3 machines. very satisfied with it.

It's too bad since I really liked AVG but they it just turned to crap. Avira is ok, it's just annoying that you have to do that whole workaround to stop the popups.

i just delete the EXE file that creates the popup. i dont go through any other hassle. and if the EXE is re-created (in mine, it isnt), you can make a batch file to delete it. Avast is a good one too, anyway.

Does that work? I thought it got created + executed right at the update? I had tried to delete it, no luck. I even tried to create a folder with the same name but it was smart enough to delete the folder and create the exe anyway. The GPO trick works nice though. If I knew how to do GPOs on a Linux domain I'd just make it a global domain policy. But I only have 2 PCs anyway.

it does work, but only for 2 weeks. at which point you have to run the BAT file again and get the executable deleted once more. well, the popup doesnt bother much, anyway. it's not obnoxious....but it could have been smaller.

I'm always looking at "free" AV software to recommend to my home clients. I used to recommend AVG Free, but I'm dumping it everywhere I can. It's hard to complain about something that's free, but AVG Free has been a mess for several months now.

I have had no issues with AVG so far and been using them for over a year or 2 so hopefully nothing will start.
