What's up with women being groped on Japanese public transportation?

I was having dinner with some friends over the weekend, and we were talking about traveling abroad. One of them mentioned that women routinely get groped in Japan on the trains. Is that true? Is that legal? How far does it go? :Q

Its a very common occurance on Japanese trains. But I've heard there are gangs of Japanese HS students that get back at these perverts by causing a huge commotion and extorting money from them.

i've seen videos where it goes as far as sex, but i refuse to believe those are real videos...no person can have sex in the middle of a crowded train without everyone knowing whats going on, pretty sick IMHO

I'll ask my friend......she just got back from Japan.....plus, she's cute as hell, so she'd be as good a target as any :)

edit: I didn't mean to sound like I approved....twas a joke. If that's really how it goes, that's sad. :(

I think they have trains especially for women for that reason. Or at least parts of the train for it.

I know lots of girls that have been groped on the subway in Tokyo. Even my ex was. Its a sad fact of life for women over there.

I have even read a few articles in the NY Times on clubs these perverts have. One guy said he actually pulled panties off a girl on the subway. It was pretty sad.

I've been on subways there and although I grew up in NYC, the Tokyo subways are many times more crowded. One time, I thought I was going to die because I got pushed to the ground and couldn't get up. That is why those guys get away with stuff like that.

I think it's because the trains are ALWAYS so crowded....and sometimes it's just inevitable. But I heard that guys had to keep their hands above their heads at all times so that they won't be accused of being a pervert/sexual harrassment and so things like this won't happen.

And as for it being legal, it's obviously not. But how are you going to know who's groping you in the middle of a crowded train? Some completely innocent guys have been falsely accused though.

It's not just Japan.

My friend got groped on a subway when we were in Paris. The guy who did it is lucky I wasn't on the same train.

I would imagine it happens frequently wherever there are crowded subways.

What does one get by groping someone? Do they think the woman will say "Oh, that makes me horny!" and ride home with them? WRONG

Yeah, I stick with cat-calls myself.

I think I got a good deal... I got my round trip ticket for $615 via Northwest. Er, I think it's DC to SF and then Negasaki?

Around February, second week of. Then I'm going to tour rest of Asia...

Have your passport ready and meet me there. :)

No, I'm in Richmond now after the job transfer. I'm driving to DC for the cheaper flight.
