What's up with UT2004?

I got:
AthlonXP 1700+
ATi Radeon 9700 Pro
1024MB PC2700
40 gig Maxtor DM8+

My friends computer:

AthlonXP 3200+
ATi Radeon 9600 Pro
512MB PC3200
80 gig Maxtor DM9+

Does UT2004 require a really powerful CPU? Because I knock my settings down to 640x480 normal everything, and I get video lag while my friend can play at 1024x768 with everything maxed out, and he doesn't get video lag at all. We also did the UT2004 benchmark and he got better scores than me. SO like I said, what's up and does this game need a powerful CPU?

What FPS score did you get vrs his?

He does in terms of PR ratings have nearly twice the CPU power feeding the GPU, that has to count for a good portion of the problem. UT is more of a GPU hog though so you shouldn't be that bad off either since you have a good deal more GPU power. I'd still be interested in the FPS vrs FPS results of the benchmark.

Also, if you have been updating you CAT drivers have you been installing them over each other? That seems to effect performance.

Yes, even UT2k3 needed a much faster CPU than you have in order to run optimally. The physics take a lot of CPU power, so try lowering them. This demo doesn't even have the crazy details of UT2003 has and that, no doubt, UT2004 retail will have.
I run a 2.4GHz P4 w/ a GF4 Ti4400 and it plays fine.

I have the same as you, except a 1800xp instead, running it very fine in 1024x768

and why doesnt the game support 1280x1024?

I`ve a XP1700+ & 9700NP so nothing special and it runs fine@1280x1024 with max settings in UT2004 including HW+EAX sound (I`m using 16xAF performance,AA on "application preference",V-sync is on,fastwrites are enabled as well.

My scores below.
dm-rankin
17.066280 / 34.104969 / 81.839981 fps
Score = 34.216656

as-convoy
10.106335 / 26.896799 / 70.506897 fps
Score = 26.983492

ons-torlan
5.739785 / 34.343819 / 75.017616 fps
Score = 34.454369

br-colossus
12.734019 / 49.955627 / 116.252853 fps
Score = 50.142036

ctf-bridgeoffate
14.704738 / 55.727917 / 119.916100 fps
Score = 55.864872

You tried it with both V-sync on and off?

640X480 seems a little drastic. I had a 1.33 Ghz AMD when I played UT2K3 and could be get a comfortable frame rate at 1024 lines of resolution. Now I've upgraded to a 3 ghz/ATI Radeon 9800PRO/1 Gig memory and it screams at 1280 lines of resolutoin.

Processor is bottlenecking you.

That's what people have told me before lol, I guess I need to upgrade, but sadly I don't have the money!
:(:Q
EDIT. I'll try lowering the physics details right now. Oh, and my friend would beat me my ~5 fps, and other times I would beat him ~5fps, but that was only like ~2 times I won.

I have an XP 1600+, 1GB of PC3200 (running at PC2100 speed), 80GB WD SE hd, and a Radeon 8500. All I did was change my controls and up the res to 1024x768x32 and everything runs REALLY smooth. I was surprised.

Yeah, that physics did do something, now I can actually PLAY (Yay!) Now I am playing at 1280x1024 max everything (except physics) and 4 AA and it runs great! See you all around 4 PM!

you guys are all on crack.....i played UT2k3 with a Thunderbird 1.33 and it ran fine with a Ti4600 with everything cranked to the max. I'm played the UT2k4 demo on a Dell 1.3 P4 laptop @ 800x600 with a weak video card and it still runs awesome with settings at the max. The graphics start giving out on Onslaught when I get a ton of stuff onscreen, but thats cuz of the vid card, not the CPU. Your CPU isn't the problem.

DO you think it could be my video card?

*EDIT* It's running slow now.
*EDIT EDIT* BTW, I put my 9700 Pro in his computer when we did the benchmarking. So he got ~5 fps in his computer with MY video card.

Hey I SirDude I have a question for you.

1) Have you tried lowering the physics option

2) arent those benchmarks that work with 2k4 all bot matches - if so you realize that it is a cpu test - the flyby is a gpu test your cpu has to control the AI of all those bots. So basically my question is does it run slowly online? You should be able to run it fine I can run it 4x8x 12x10 with my flash modded 5900u.

Wrong.

I play lag free optimized with:

1.3gig amd athlon
gf4 ti4600
1 gig ram
win2kpro
80gb seagate barracuda hd
sb audigy 2sz
