I'm guessing "Zedville" isn't close to a major city?

EDIT: It's a common term in NYC, not sure about other metropolitan areas.

Boston has a number of bodegas. Even in STL i think a place called Straubs could be considered a bodega.

they are little small groceries/convenience stores found on every corner in the hood. Bonus points if it has the same 3-4 males outside of it all day everyday discretely or not so discretely serving junkies.

It means different things in different countries, in Argentina it refers to a wine cellar or place where you keep or sell booze.
Just like the word concha, it means sea shell or conch in most Spanish countries, but in Argentina it's slang referring to a woman's pussy.

There is a tapas place near here called La Bodega; I always assumed it meant restaurant/tavern in Spanish. I've never heard it used in casual conversation though.

In Western Canada nobody says dumb crap like that, its a corner store or convenience store.

How can you even post something this stupid? Bodega is a perfectly acceptable word and like others have said, is common in Chicago, Manhattan, etc. You make it sound like people started calling the store "WickyWacky" or something nonsensical.

It's dumb because only people in NYC or Chicago say it. And even though they're only 4% of the population, they assume everyone talks like that. And it sounds retarded.

Grew up in and around LA and have never heard one person call any type of market that, large or small.

Non hispanic people using Bodega is as pretentious as that stupid word 'Cantina' for describing trendy euro-themed bars.

What? No... it really has nothing to do with Spanish... though it is a Spanish word. I'm of Irish and Italian decent and heard/used the word my entire life, as did everyone I can remember knowing back home... in fact most of these shops are run these days by Indians or Orientals. :hmm:

I've used the word "bodega" in my youth. It always referred to a small/convenience store which in the area I grew up were plentiful and usually located side by side inside a bigger building/shopping complex.

I know of it from reading books and the odd mention in a movie or TV show. Never actually heard its use in person.

I always thought it was a kind of building... like an abode. Even imagined a domed dirt structure.

What if its not on a corner or convenient? :hmm:

From the Wikipedia article on Convenience stores under the section for Canada

Convenience stores are also commonly referred to as "corner stores," "mini-marts," or "variety stores" in some regions of Canada. In the French-speaking province of Quebec, a convenience store is known as a "dépanneur", or "dep" for short.[5] "Dépanneur" means literally "one who gets you out of a jam".

To Canadians bodega sounds like a very odd thing to call a store.

I used to watch Law and Order all the time, they use the word bodega a lot. I gathered what it meant, but have never heard it in normal conversation. Gotta be a regional/cultural thing.
