whats up with these 75GXP IBM hard drives?

When I first got my 75GXP 75GB IBM drive i was excited. I heard on the reviews that these particular drives were good performers and that they were also very quiet. Okay, so when i plugged in the drive what happens, its loud as hell. When it reads and writes it grinds like a mofo. Fine, i looked for the IBM acoustic utility and set it on real quiet, i figured i can handle the penalty in access times. Everything goes fine, i cant hear anything when it reads/writes. Two months later, guess what, the drive fails. I didnt even have any warning whatsoever. One day i turned on the computer and the bios failed to detect the hard drive during bootup. I didnt do anything to this computer, i tested the drive on 2 other computers and the same problem persists. so I RMA the drive back to IBM and got a replacement 5 days later. Great a new drive i thought to myself. Just finished installing the drive into my system and guess what. the reads and writes are LOUD AS HELL just like before when i first got it. THis time ive decided to forget about the acoustic utlity and see what happens. I dont know what kind of drives the reviewers of the 75GXP had but my drive was loud as hell. My friend bought a 60GB western digital and his drive was so quiet i couldnt even hear anything at all when it reads or writes, its like its not there. I dont know how long my new IBM drive is going to last, but if it breaks down again like before im going to refund it back and get me a Western Digital or maxtor.

The 75GXP have been well known to have problems, the 60GXP is to replace it because of that, from what I hear they have been more successful, I myself got a 60gb 60gxp but haven't been able to test it because of shipping issues on my mobo.

I have a 41gig 60gxp, its a pretty sweet drive, ive had it for bout 3months, its fast, quiet, and runs cool, been reliable so far jus passin my .02cents...

yea i have had problems with these drives now after 5 months. One of my roommates starting to fail like have cluster damaged and i get these loud clicking noises where the computer slows down because of that

A friend of mine brother works at IBM and he said the 75gig drive has a head parking scheme problem and thats all he would say about it.
