Whats up with the X800 XL?

is it just me, or is ati's x800 xl card awsome? its seems like its one of the faster cards out today, but its overclocking utility selection is limited. ive tried a plathora of utilities, and only one has had full support: powerstrip. the one utility that i really wanted to work, rage 3d tweak, woulnt even install. does anybody else out there have any opinions on this card? i love mine, and am just curious as to what others feel about it. thanks for any input.

its a good fast card and at a good price, but for me at the end of the day its still older technology sped up, unlike the 6800's. i really do think this range of ATI cards has been a stop gap for them

What does it matter what the newness of the technology is, if it performs great at a great price? The card spanks some ass and even buys it dinner first. I got mine for $221 shipped. Sexy.

The thing that really impresses me is that the X800XL doesn't even require a power via a molex connector!

Talk about an efficient card :D

Talk about an efficient card :D

At idle, the X800XL (.11u) uses 1 (one) watt less power than a X800XT (.13u)
At load the X800XL (.11u) uses 11watts less power than a X800XT (.13u)

While it does use less power, I wouldn't call that a huge increase in efficiency considering it's core mem clocks are slower than a XT. Especially after a manufacturing process shrink.

I wasn't familiar with the actual power intake of the card...i was actually just trying to say that i like how no power cable is needed to run such a good card
(keeps case neater :)).

I would rather have a 6600gt over an x800xl just because of SM3.0...but remember, i upgrade almost NEVER and needed something good for cheap...and i have almost no money....

ATI needs to work a little harder...i think next gen will change that ;)

I thought you were talking efficiency. My mistake. Didn't know you meant tidyness.

6600gt over the x800 xl? BAH! the cards are in a dead heat as far as performance goes, with the obvious exception of doom III. plus the xl is about a hundred bucks cheaper AND doesnt require an extra power lead, as previously pointed out. and with the SM 3.0, yes, that would be nice if ati cards had that, but are there even very many, if any, games out that support it? but i will say this about the xl: i am a dissappointed with its ability to overclock. but then again, do i really need to overclock when i can run half life 2 at 1280x1024 with setting maxed and 4xAA and 4x Aniso on? lol

SM3.0 will become a big deal as soon as AoEIII nears release.

Err, 6600GT is less than X800XL.
6800GT is $100 more and about the same performance level.

That is, if a 6800GT can come close to running it with all the effects turned on. If it's a slideshow at 1024x768, the utility is diminished a tad. :p

Id take few fps slower and the newer features not on ATI cards, if you really want to play games maxed esp soon to be released one, you need buy the top card not middle to top range.

I have no doubts that a 6800GT/U SLI will run anything for the next year or two (whether it will be a better price/performance solution than a single next-gen card is another question).

That solution also costs $750-800+ for just the video cards, plus you need a premium motherboard and possibly a bigger PSU. This is hardly an option for most people, even most 'enthusiasts'.

While what you say is true, it is still an option nonetheless.

You just will not let that SM3 thought die will you. Don't even compare a 6600 against a 800XL...different league. A 6800GT and 800xl...different story. As for the SM3, give it a rest.

Show me a PS3.0 game on a 6600GT beat a PS2.0 on X800XL in the same game. The only place PS3.0 "shines" is on games that the developer rigged it in exchange for Nvidia $$.

Yup.. just keep plucking those SM3 strings to a slide show of Riddick while I get 60 fps with everything high on my XL. Back on topic I am really impressed with this card.. I was on my way to getting a 6800GT till I caught the CUSA Biz deal the very same night I decided to buy. Extra finances went to my L90D+ 8ms LCD and I couldn't be happier.

If you happen to have another $400+ to spend. It's not a realistic option for the vast majority of people. In this case you'll end up running the game in SM2.0 mode anyway, and would have been better off saving $100 and buying an X800XL instead.

Suggesting that people should pay a premium for a 6800GT now (for SM3.0) and then upgrade to a 6800GT SLI if it doesn't perform acceptably using SM3.0 is ludicrous IMO.
