What's up with the custom avatars for the "select few?"

Hey! I just noticed that a few select members are sporting custom AVATARS in addition to custom nicks. WUWT? I checked the Profiles section and said avatars are not selectable by the unwashed masses.

Is this a subscriber-only thing?

It's an AnandTech Staff thing, at least with avatars anyway.

The custom titles are another matter.

You can use the forum Standard Mode and not see any avatars, or smileys.
