What's up with Stephen Colbert's right ear?

I've probably watched 80-90% of all the Colbert Report episodes in the past year or so. I was watching tonight and my friend who has never seen it before asked me why his right ear is so weird. I can't believe I've went so long without noticing it. Now that I know about it, I can't stop staring at it :disgust: It's like it's a Vulcan or elf ear. According to Wikipedia, he is deaf in that ear and had surgery done.
