TSMC 40nm issues.
New Nvidia architecture
Buy what you want. Either congratulate yourself in January for buying ATI now (January seems to be the rumoured ETA going around) and the 58xx beats out GF100, or be remorseful that you didn't wait if GF100 lays waste to 58xx. If you buy now, you have a 100% chance to be either one of these. If you wait, and see what GF100 is in comparison to 58xx, you can see for yourself what unfolds and pick then. Your chances of being remorseful with your purchase are eliminated.
If you "need" a card now, that is a different story. Needs and wants are different animals.

So you are saying January then.

Ok, you can be the pessimist, and I'll be the optimist. January availability in quantity. Not just the top end card either, but a whole range of "Fermi" based GPUs. And, we may be looking at G80 all over again. Good supply and competitive price/performance.
You're dreaming, at best.

The only thing that has even taped out is the top end Fermi silicon, nothing below that. Nvidia will use rebranded DX10.1 parts (and some DX10.0) to fill out the rest of the lineup for months after Fermi GeForce launches, whenever that will be. (January is extremely unlikely unless the mother of all paper launches)

It's a shame Keys that you're part of the Nvidia Focus Group, which pretty much means you need to be optomistic about Fermi and not critical :)

But even so, it may be great, it may not. We'll all have to see...

But I'm not expecting it to be anything great..it may be "good enough", but I doubt it'll be amazing (yes, an uneducated guess). My reason for thinking that is mostly from ATI!
They also hyped up the long-awaited R600, which turned out to be not-so-great..
Nvidia doesn't really have a choice but to say what they are saying now... it's not like they'd admit to their card sucking..

And it's a shame you can't see that I was offering the polar opposite of ZimZum on purpose to show that the possibilities are there for both scenarios. It's a shame you can't see that.
I truly don't know yet what is to come.

Yeah, and you are certain of this because.......?

@JStorm1: January is the rumor. Not from Nvidia. From sites that are getting leaks.

And do you something we don't?

"There are no American infidels in Baghdad. Never!"
"My feelings - as usual - we will slaughter them all"
"Our initial assessment is that they will all die"

Why do your posts always remind me to those of the Iraqi Information Minister...?

That's easy. Because you can't stand me and will spin the utmost worst you can from every syllable I post. Watch what you do with this post. Should be entertaining. And I have to laugh when you say things like, "The thing that will hurt Nvidia most is if you buy their cards." Heh, ok.... WTF? :)

If fermi does not beat the 5870, it would be nothing short of a disaster for NV

It would be even worse than the nv40 launch, it would only be comparable to ATI's shambolic 29xx launch

You mean NV30 launch, yes? NV40 was quite good.

I don't think anyone is certain, but Nvidia already missed the 09 launch and has delayed it to Q1 of 2010. Q1 for Nvidia starts on January 26th and lasts until April 26th according to a number of sites, that doesn't give them much time for a January launch if they are sticking with Q1 as the claimed. Wouldn't it make more sense for Nvidia to claim a January launch instead if January was truely their intention?

http://vr-zone.com/articles/nvidia-fermi-in-q1-2010/8006.html?doc=8006

Most sites I see stating Q1 are just reportinng what Nvidia said. Those that I see giving their opinions seem to be suggesting March - April (which is still Q1).

http://hardocp.com/news/2009/11/23/more_fermi_rumors_good

http://www.semiaccurate.com/2009/11/02/nvidia-finally-gets-fermi-a2-taped-out/ (Yea, it's Charlie but he actually explains his thinking/dates)

And I can't seem to find it, but I read one site that stated Fermi won't likely have any retail availability until May. I'll edit this if I find it.

I don't think I've seen any websites suggesting January as the authors opinion... maybe they're around, I haven't seen them though.

It seems that m

A part of me would love for Fermi to suck so that I can see how you guys spin it into something positive

The difference between the "zoners" and people like Wreckage is, we all know what happened and know it is a fact, we dont try to hide it... Everyone knows the 2900XT sucked, and the 3870 was mediocre, (just like Intel was beating AMD hard after the Core2 launch)... AMD only got back into the game with the 48xx launch, we dont need to spin it, its the truth

But not you, Nvidia is a flawless company in your world and can never make mistakes, even if they release a bad card "it was planned all along", its hilarious... Why cant you just admit it, Nvidia engineers are humans and make mistakes, theres bound to be a bad launch every once in a while

Anyway, at this point I think Fermi will be more like 1800XT... It came out late but still delivered respectable performance, so much that Nvidia released the 700$ phantom GTX512 to compete

Given the transistor count I don't expect any sub $400 fermi parts anytime soon. Places like fudzilla need to put doubt in purchasers minds so they don't pull the trigger on a 5800 series card. I'd expect we get the real release date mid January, stating mid February release date. The real question will be whether or not it's a hard launch.

But fudzilla doesn't need to spin too much since ATi has supply issues. They'd have alot more fake leaks to prevent purchases if they had been widely available.

Something tells me that at this point nV is incapable of releasing a dx11 card that under-performs. It would be a massive blow to them and their CEO will not allow it. My guess is that Fermi has use-able silicon at this point, but it has lower performance than desired, so they are going to keep respinning till they can get a card that spanks the 5xxx series cards.

I'm in the process of upgrading my other SFF rig to a i7 750 setup so I think I'll wait and keep the current 8800GT in it til Q1 2010 and see what happens. It should do me fine till then. We're only talking three or four months at most.

Actually the difference is in your first sentence. I won't speak for Keys or anyone else but, I don't want AMD to suck. I don't take video cards personally. The fact that some of you take it personally and want bad things to happen, not only to a company but anyone who talks positive about a company is a difference that separates me from you and those like you.

lol, you mean the loud hairdryer style fans that ATI then used on their 1x00, 2x00, 3x00, and even some 4x00 series? yeah... no thanks.

WTF are you talking about? Do you even know what I'm talking about? It's 9700 Pro times, kido, waaay before ATI and it was much louder than anything ever made by ATI, let alone it was ~1 year late and came with half the memory bandwidth compared to 9700 Pro.
