What's up with MS Front Page 2000?

I see a lot of people saying stay away from it.

Why?

It does produce some nice looking web pages.

I just got a free copy.

Help! BEFORE I spend too much time with it.

i haven't heard any bad things about it yet, & i've been using since it came out, i even made a webpage from it at http://members.xoom.com/etcnews/ it's a very beginner webpage, looking at it might huurt your eyes if your a professional builder.

I have built my own website from MS Word and then edited the HTML to make it work exactly for me.

As I understand it, FP 2000 is a WYSIWYG page builder. So HTML editing is probably out of the question.

Are there any other disadvantages? Many websites use it.

Click on symbols below the "DONE!"/"CANCEL" buttons for a full explanation (make it easy for us older lazy members).

i once used a old html program to make make buttons & just copy the html code & then click the html tab of fp2000 & then insert the html, but now I just use gif buttons because it much easier & since i only get around 30 visitors a day, it's would be useless to make it too fancy. you should also be able to use flash4 with fp2000 but i wouldn't know how to do it myself.

FP 2000 has been working great for me, handles everything well, and doesnt change the stuff you dont want to change, I spend more than half the time in the HTML editor though, tweaking things to get them exactly how i want them. plus i add ASP scripts a lot, and you cant do that in the WYSIWIG tab.

Also very nice how it connects to your server and you can upload anything just by clicking save. And the button it ads to IE makes it easy to open up page.

What little Ive seen of FP2000 generated code has made me sick.
Tryig to go through the crappy code generated tends to gimme a headache.
Im not into that stuff too much these days though, so no biggie for me.
Then the fact that I dont trust MS software to generate 100% W3C compliant code is another reason why I dont like it.

I use it all the time to make web pages for some of my clients. It's quick and easy and makes good looking web pages that are easy to change/maintain. You can edit the HTML code directly if that's what turns your crank. Most of the people I've built sites for just want them to look pretty, be reliable, and be inexpensive to create and maintain. So far no one's asked me to do anything that couldn't be done in Front Page 2000. But I don't do and will never do e-commerce sites. All my clients are professionals and just use their sites as advertising and for vanity. So the demands for custom code are minimal. And I don't care too much if the generated code isn't the neatest around.

So in short, I like Front Page 2000 pretty well.

FrontPage extensions are notorious for being insecure. Although this has improved with later versions, it's still a concern.

Not to mention the terrible code it produces...and the fact that older versions tend to edit your code to what it thinks is proper (which can break everything you've worked so hard to put together by hand)

Insecure, how? I am using FP 2000.

Hating Mycrowsoft is not a good enough reason not to use it since I got it for free. I will only be producing 'advertising' - not e-commerce - web sites

Does the 2K version tend to also produce 'bad' or 'terrible' code? I assume you mean it is hard to edit . . .

Last question. Any good tutorials/books etc., which will shorten my learning process?

I just ran the tutorial that came with FP2k and then scanned the (lame) manual. That and a little basic HTML knowledge was all I needed to get going.

Then practice, practice, practice. Screw things up. Try again. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I tried FP 2000 but I didn't like it, so I went back to 98. 98 has better file managment.

All those sites are nice but FP won't create great graphics for you, and those sites also use advanced scripting that FP does not generate, they got it elsewhere. Still very nice sites none the less.

Neither dies HTML, that?s why you use programs such as PS, PSP; HomeSite 4.5 (which is what I use) won?t make great graphics for you also. FP2K is just another method of putting it all together.

As far as scripting, Workin is correct, you can input your scripts using FP2000s HTML tab; the same way you would any other HTML editor.
