what's up with California and cancer/birth defects?

Why is it that almost every single product has the warning "This product is known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects" on it? I've always laughed at that. Why California?

I was cleaning out my furnace, and even my furnace has that note on it lol.

That why I don't live in California. Normal products that are fine elsewhere cause serious health issues out there. I think the vibrations along the fault lines disturb people's chakra, and make them more susceptible to cancer, and other health issues.

California requires pretty much everything that has any evidence of causing certain kinds of diseases to be labeled as such. The thing is, almost everything contains some sort of chemical that has been known to cause something in the past. When I lived in CA every single apartment complex had a warning that said that things there caused cancer.

Now because everything is labelled as dangerous, no matter how small the risk, you can't tell the difference between something really dangerous and something that is basically a non-issue.

lol wow it's kinda lame. So because one state decides to go all paranoid then the rest of the world needs to read their silly labels? I kinda figured it was something like that but now that confirms it.

Pretty much everything can be a hazard of some sort for your health. Lot of products do contain lead or other "cancerous" substances, but it does not make this products dangerous during regular use. If common sense is used pretty much anything can be safe if used properly.

I think it's fine to make people aware. At least if you know something may be dangerous you can make an informed choice on whether or not to use it.

What's wrong with that?

Let's clarify something for the uninformed. Almost EVERYTHING causes cancer, the determining factors being dose level and duration of exposure.

Like others have said, if you do this for any tiny little risk then it teaches people to ignore warnings. It dilutes the effectiveness of warning labels for bigger risks.

People need to use there own common sense. People in california clearly cannot use there common sense.

America (and Australia too) are Sue- societies. There are companies that sell beer nuts that have on the packaging "product may contain nuts" Because some idiot with a nut allergy would eat them, get sick, than sue the nut company.

Don't worry about it...

You should really see the cancer warnings on cigarettes in some other countries, they plaster some very disturbing images right on the packages. After a while, you start to enjoy them as "abstract" art in a sick, twisted way.

There's a reason why our economy is ranked so high.

Unfortunately some where down the line you lost sight of reality though and moved from an economy founded on sound principles to an artificial economy. Companies and jobs are leaving your state. Capitol flight is happening yet you choose to dismiss it. Your prices are artificially high due to too much government overhead.....you guys are clueless if you think it just keeps on keepin' on.
