Whats up with BeOS?

Silly question but what is BeOS? I have seen it posted several times and I know it is an OS, but what is it like? Linux?

Search the forum first.. here have been lots of discussions about this already... and try google after that.

Summary:

"A couple of guys from the MAC team created a new operating system... it didnt take hold because it could not compete with linux and open source for the mindshare of developers not doing Microsoft, so it died... It was fast, it was pretty, it was cool... but the company will be history very soon and the OS will be as important as AmigaOS soon."

BeOS was an awesome product. VERY well implemented GUI, faster than Linux or Windows, and a UNIX-like command line (only if you wanted it though. It was hidden very well. Lack of apps and hardware support drove it into the ground though. I think the free version of BeOS was basically just the "we give up" signal. If only there were good Radeon and Santa Cruz drivers for the thing . . . .

OOh, god forbid somebody ask an honest question on a "DISCUSSION FORUM!" Don't be such a tightass about people asking the same questions as others in months past. If you don't like it, don't answer.

As for beOS, I agree with MGMorden, although there are good 3rd party Radeon drivers available.

I don't think its dead yet. If Be had put more effort into marketing and developing drivers for modern hardware, it might have gone alot farther.
I'm just wondering if they have given up on it, or will they continue to release versions....
I also don't think Be is going away, they are just putting all their efforts into embedded systems.

Well.. I just said this because we JUST HAD this discussion in the LAST WEEK or so.

BeOS is gone. Essentially anyways. BeIA is the new product that they are pushing. BeOS had a wonderful GUI, a command line (I think it was bash though so it wasnt worth that much), and an awesome file system. Hopefully they realize that the OS could be great and continue to develop it.

the whole "search the forums" preaching is such a PITA. I mean, people take a look at the first 40 postings and if it's not there, they post (usually). If you posted in response to earlier query, who the heck says you have to post again? It's their loss if they didn't search. Furthermore, it's a lost cause to constantly be telling posters to search the forums.

On the topic of BeOS, to my recollection it's on the path to die. 🙁 It is a great operating system that could be made even better the source code were open. I even go as far as to say it could kill Linux if it were open source.
