What's up with 7800GTX pricing?

Looking at new cards on Newegg, and there are eleven 7900GTX cards to choose from, all with 512 megs of DDR3, and ranging in price from $499 to $599. 650 mhz - 675 mhz. GPU clock, with 1600-1750 mhz ram clocks.

So I'm drooling over these, and think to myself that the 7800 GTXs ought to be getting cheaper. There are eleven of those to choose from as well.

Looking at the second 7800GTX on the list, I about choked. Ok, so they are giving a $30 rebate, but $489 for 256 megs, 490 mhz GPU, 1300 mhz ram? Or for another $30 (basically spend the rebate) and I can get 512 megs and all the other goodness of a 7900 GTX 512?

Am I missing something here? Most of the 256 meg 7800GTXs are still priced in the mid- to high-400's, but I can get a 7900GTX/512 for a little over 500?

Yeah I don't understand this much either. I traded my 9 month old 7800 GTX, an ASUS A8V-E Deluxe Mobo that I had laying around and a PSU for a new 7900 GT so I could spend just an extra $300 and get SLI goodness instead of paying the rediculous price for a 7800 GTX. Plus I helped a friend get into BF2.

After a couple more months, the prices will drop, but there's no way they'd immediately be lowered to 7900GT level prices . . .

Even this is debatable...

7800GTX is made on 130 nm process... much pricier than the 90 nm G71. It's relatively easy to get a 7900GT to clock at 500mhz on 90nm, and pretty hard to get a 7800GTX to clock at the same 500mhz. Therefore it will be pricier. To compare, look at the 6800 Ultra's that still haven't gone down in price...

Um, the 7800GTX uses the 110nm process. Nvidia has been using that process since the GeForce 6600 series . . . And nvidia actually had been getting pretty good yields on their 110nm fabs . . .

But you're right, they are still more expensive to make than the 90nm cards. But the fact of the matter is, they WILL go down in price, the question is how long that will take.

Yeah, the cost should not really be the issue here. The market decides pricing, ultimately. If they can hold the price up on the 7800 GTX then it means a lot of people are opting to pay $50 less for half the memory, 200 Mhz. less core clock and ram clock. That seems strange to me. Who would make that choice? If you can afford $449 for a 7800GTX you can afford $519 for a much more capable 7900GTX/512, can't you?

newegg still sells x850xtpe's and 6800ultras for 400 dollars. I wouldn't expect the 7800 to go down much.

Where did you find a $400 6800 Ultra on Newegg's site? All I see are 6800's, GEs, GTs, and XT's, and none of them over $200. In the $300-400 price range it's all Radeon's and 7800GTXs, and a few 7900 GTs.

As soon as they need the storage space for something else and thus have to get rid of the old, overpriced "junk". They're just trying to cut their losses now. Could be a few months though.

Oops... my bad on the size. I generally stick to die sizes of CPUs and forget that GPUs kind of go incrementally in comparison. But my opinion still remains that the 7800GTX most likely won't drop in price.
