Ok so Im sitting here watching baseball waiting for my g/f to call on a tuesday night. Im reading some stuff on the internet, about how stores rip people off. Mainly Circuit City, since thats where I work.

Now let me give you a little background information first. Im a 19 year old college student in need of money (aren't all college students?). Ive been working for Circuit City for about 8 months or so. Before this I worked at Publix making $6.50 an hour after my raise (safe to say I was poor). I got sick of cleaning toilets (and I wasn't even a janitor) so I applied at CC. I was hired as a product specialist in the technology department (Digi cams, Camcorders, Computers etc...).

Now as Im sure most of you know Circuit City (as with most retail stores) sells an extended warranty plan. Im sure most of AT knows that it is indeed a ripoff as well (for the few that try to defend it, go read consumer reports, Rip Off Reports, or any other website that takes complaints).

Now Circuit City pretty much forces its employees to sell this warranty (why wouldn't they, its a great money maker for them). They threaten employees with a cut in hours, or even termination if their numbers aren't above a certain percent. Obviously being a college student in need of money, a cut in hours or termination is not a good thing. Now some of you may remember quite a few months back I had posted about tips on selling this warranty. It appears I picked up really well. Infact Im one of the most proficient at selling this warranty, while keeping lying to a minimum. (Its more of stretching the truth, I don't outright lie). But hey, I did what I had to do to take care of my a$s first ya know?

Turns out Circuit City has created a new line of workers. A couple of people in each store have been promoted to whats called a Senior Product Specialist. Basically a glorified Product Specialists that performs well and is a bit more knowledgeable. Obviously these promotions were based upon numbers (*mostly*). I was one of the guys who got promoted. Ok, so now Im making $10 an hour, which isn't HORRIBLE for a college student, but by no means good.

My question now is, if you were in my position what would you do? Would you quit, and looking for take another job that pays even less, or isn't as enjoyable? (For the most part I enjoy working at CC, I just don't like selling warranties) Or, would you just stick around and do whatcha gotta do to get paid?

And if you respond with a "Don't whore yourself out to that company" please offer some other ideas. I can't just quit, Ive got tuition to pay and car payments to make. If I were to quit I'd need to have another better paying job and something more stable. So where? What should I look for?

Well this post was longer then I intended, hope you got this far and I appreciate all your responses.

Don't quit. I can't believe you're saying that $10/hr. isn't that great for a college student. I'm in Ann Arbor, one of the most expensive college towns in the nation, and I'm thanking my lucky stars to have one job that pays $10.25 and another that pays $8.50. My sister went to school in southern Ohio and topped out as a dining hall student manager at $7.00/hr., and that was hitting the pot of gold for that area.

Hell...you're not SUPPOSED to like your college job. Stick at CC, rake in the dough, and enjoy the rest of your life. Don't make everything revolve around work.

whats your major at college? Ask a professor in your field if you can work for them, a lot of them pay well. Also, in my experience, on campus jobs pay decently and offer great hours (although at my school you cant work over 20 hrs/wk while youre in school). but if i were in your shoes i would probably stay put because 10$/hr jobs ARE tough to come by as a college student

I don't approve, but hey, you do what you have to, people don't HAVE to buy one...if they do, it's not your fault, you did your job. But in terms of a college job, maybe I'm just lucky, but having a few connections should find you a job that'll pay that well quite easily. I never needed a job at UM, as I could live off of the random money here and there plus my summer earnings, but had enough links around campus to find an IT job if I needed one.

Just know where to look and ask some important people...you'd be amazed as to what you can turn up. Never stop looking for a job, even if you have one ;)

I agree, it is pretty good paying. But Im sure there are better, or atleast similar paying not in this line of work.

The main issue I have is I don't enjoy ripping people off. I guess I just have a conscious (I know it sucks) and sometimes it bothers me. I mean, how would you feel if you just sold someone an LCD screen and said "Ya know, you should really buy this extended warranty plan because there is a decent chance it may go bad within the next couple of years" Or whatever else, knowing full well that yes, it could happen... but chances are pretty slim if they take care of it.

If you truly enjoy your job, STICK WITH IT!!

Because there are a LOT of jobs out there that you won't.

I stuck with a job I loved even though it only paid $5.50/hr...because everything else about that job rocked.

and $10/hr isn't bad at all in Michigan.

Hey, arnt you the guy who was bending over in some picture sex'n with your comput'a? ;)

I say, go for it....but only if it pays better! On your off time, look for another job sure, but don't quit the one you have until you find something of equel or greater value.

Good Luck!

I go to school in NYC, and $10 is not a bad job for a college student - it's enough to get by here, and I feel like things are expensive around here. :D

i would stick with it.

i work for BB and they really want to push the service plan as well (but we dont have quotas or anything)

i dont try to rip people off, i tell them about the benefits and the drawbacks. personally, i dont think we are doing anything wrong as long as we arent lying

apply else where, but keep your job until you find something you want, and pays good.

thats how you need to do it.

Same

Right now im just a HS Senior, i make a little over $7/hr as a grocery store cashier, its a cooshy job, we can be up to 7minutes late and still punch in, were not forced to say anything thats too pushy, just point out a few sales going on.

Anyway, im applying at CC because i need more money, and the world is buyer beware after all, i don't mind pushing extended warranties to people who could care less bout a $3000 purchase to not do any research. If they don't care why should i?

So, i say stick with your job, sounds like the management team there is pretty cool and the pay is good, just remember the the person walking in the door and buys an extended warranty didn't do their research and obviously don't care about their money enough to spend it wisely, its not your job to wrry about how other people spend their money.

edit: i'd fix my mistakes but i'm on a crappy laptop.
