What's this: mode con codepage prepare=((850) C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ega.cpi)

As a final upgrade to my PIII systems I upgraded the CPUs to 850Mhz, the max the mobo will support.

After a reformat and reload of Windows 98 SE my autoexec file was modified by the Windows install script to contain the following commands:

mode con codepage prepare=((850) C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ega.cpi)
mode con codepage select=850

Could someone tell me what these commands are doing?

The system has started to lockup when I run a computer game so I'm chasing down everything I don't understand. The system was running fine (as far as I could tell) with the 850Mhz CPU before I reloaded windows.

TIA

That stuff looks like lines entered by the computer game setup, not windows. They look like entries to run the game in dos protected mode, I'm not sure. -- Lookie here

It sets the codepage (character setting) essentialy setting the language and special characters (codepage 850 = Latin-1)

Thank you for the information, but I am pretty sure the member is not still seeking the answer almost 18 years later.
