uncapping your modem is illegal. its so you can get more bandwidth.
*note to self: cap your modem*

What is everyone getting for speed on their cable modem. I get this from computingcentral.com

Your line speed:

3371.9 Kbps

413.2 K bytes/sec

That seems awefully fast to me :) Is this normal? According to their chart, this is faster than T1 line (MUCH FASTER). I can't see how. The service in my area is new, so I don't have too much competition yet. My dad is getting roughly the same speed. I hope the speed doesn't drop too much when others get on here.

BW:

Could be bandwith saturation. You've had it a year and I bet many in your area have got on the bandwagon since then. Do you notice the slowdown more so during "peak times"? You could try the tweaks for your OS at this site:

Speed Guide

Jamey:
From Computing Central:

Line speed:

2849.2 Kbps

349.2 K bytes/sec

May be cluttered, but I find the information to be more accurate in relation to tweaking broadband. I haven't been to speedguide in a while, but I remember in my last visit reading something that made not too much sense in relation to broadband. I also feel dslreports has better explanations for their tweaks and why to do them and what they are, and they have a tweak tester to help determine what tweaks you may need.

I think maybe you're talking about a program that I've seen to "uncap" your upload speed. Take my cable service for instance. I'm allowed 128 kbits/sec upload and something like 2.8 Mbits download. This upload throttling is done within the cable modem itself (man somebody correct me if I'm wrong) via the config file that is downloaded to the modem on initilization. Given that this file is fetched from a TFTP/BOOTP server within the service providers network I really can't see how you can change it unless you trick the cable modem into using a different config that you provide.

It is my opinion that there is NO WAY to uncap this limit. Let me say again...MY OPINION, I would love to hear somebody prove me wrong. I'd try it in a heartbeat. :)

I'll try to find a link for the program that is supposed to "uncap" broadband service. However, it sounds like a load of bull to me. PrinceofWands....where you at?

I agreee, I think it would be very hard to uncap a cable modem; but you can tweak your computer for better throughput. I adjusted my RWIN on my computer and it upped my connection speed, for example.

The setting to boost your speed is actually the packet size request setting. By allowing your system to request larger packets you will download a bit faster. However, if the line quality is bad than your system will be slower to react to bad packets.

Example: if you increase this setting to an extremely LARGE number--your downloading may double in speed. But this same system won't work very well with online gaming, where small packets are used.

Its kind of a trade off - download vs speed. DSLreports.com has an excellent chart to show the preferred settings you should use. But when you get the hang of it all, try the settings till you are happy...

That's exactly what I'm talking about TerreApart, the receive window setting in the registry (RWIN). It works wonders.

Too many people focus on the not very effective MTU, which is pointless for broadband. And even more people try to go and figure out some zany idea to uncap their modem or whatnot before they even try to tweak their computer for the connection, which is much easier.
