I plan on upgrading my X1900XT to a single high-end card in December.
Thinking around $200-$250.

I know some new cards just came out but is there any news on better cards that will come out before then?

Nothing new by then AFAIK btu the prices of cards right now would settle. maybe we will see a 4870 for 250, that would be so intense

The recently released Radeon 4870 will surely be in your price range by winter. At the moment, no other products in that range have been announced yet.

The current Nvidia drivers support the GTX 200-400, so you may expect a GTX290 or even higher....then the price of the older ones should come down. Who knows? You could probably get a GTX260 for that price by then.

If you must go ATI, you could maybe get whatever the new dual-gpu card is for around that at that time. Pure guesswork, though. :)

Think it is feasible for nVidia to work in DX10.1 hardware support in the possible GTX290ish card?

Depends on how far Jen-Hsun Huang has his head up his ass. If they're too busy pursuing the GPGPU market (battling for Intel market share) they won't put the resources into supporting 10.1 features.

if it was cheap/easy to include 10.1 they would have done it by now. they're probably just going to skip 10.1 unless they're forced into it kicking and screaming.

@denithor: be careful of what you say about huang, he might open up a can of whoopass on your ;) . seriously, the guy took a startup 15 yrs ago and turned it into a $10+ BILLION COMPANY. I'd be inclined to give him a little leeway and see where he goes before saying his head's up his ass quite yet. Is nvidia getting spanked right now? yes. will they still be getting spanked after the 55nm refresh of gt200? probably. will they be behind in 12-18 mos? what do YOU think? I know what I think about nvidia's long-term prognosis, and it's the opposite of amd's.
