What's there to do in Detroit?

Argo

Lifer
Going to Detroit next week for a couple of days (Dearborn, MI to be exact). Is there anything to do there?

Ok, is there anything to do that won't get me arrested? Surely Detroit can't be that much of a hole?

the only things i've done in D-town are (and i lived right across the river for 7-8 years and now i work right across):

- Red Wings
- Lions
- Tigers
- Pistons
- shopping
- concerts & shows

Based on that, I'd say check the Pistons schedule. If you are into shopping, take I-75 north to Big Beaver Rd. (exit 69 haha - not joking) and check out Somerset Mall. It has 2 sections - 1 for rich people and 1 for ridiculously insanely rich people. ehhehe no the regular section ain't that bad. I sit on the benches while the wife shops! 😀 We also like to visit the Gibraltar trade center every few years. It's sorta ghetto but it's fun to walk around in. Then you have Greektown and the 3 casinos too. Detroit is a surprisingly strong arts community too, just don't get lost on your way to the museum! 😉 no seriously don't get lost. ever.

go to bakers keyboard lounge, its a really cool old jazz club (if you like jazz that is...)

also in dearborn there are really good middle eastern restaurants such as "la shish"

oh yeah and i'm pretty sure the International Auto Show is coming up soon... i've been to that about 10 times but nothing beats the Autorama I went to back in the 80s... both Kit AND Hasselhoff were there... hehehe i got to sit in the Kit car and they make it say your name. lol

Auto Show is great for both the cars and the models. bring digital cam, i want pics.

The North American International Car show, Pistons, casinos, greektown and the ever popular game of not getting shot.

As was mentioned, the Detroit International Auto Show is by far the biggest thing happening this month. It's open to the press Jan 9-11 and to the public the rest of the week (I believe those are the dates).

I will make sure to stop by La Shish.

Where exactly is the autoshow? I'd like to stop by. Are they open late? The only time I'll really have free is next Thursday evening.

Well you'll be too early for the NAIAS...La Shish is pretty good and fairly authentic, although still fairly commercial...smaller family owned joints tend to be better sometimes. If you like sushi, check out Crave which just opened a couple of weeks ago...I believe the head chef is someone pulled from Nobu! They also have one of the best up and coming local DJs spinning on Thursdays I think.

as for downtown...you can check out the DIA, the Opera House, CPOP, Hard Rock, Greektown, 3 casinos...a decent amount of things to fill your night with.
