What's the worst year of pollution in the US and why?

I'm thinking it's 1979 before cars had emission controls. My gf says early 1970s because people burned their trash. Does anybody have a Specific year and why? Thanx!
Jay

edit: whoops, forgot to mention...we're talking air pollution.

but i would agree with the car standards that you mentioned. obviously that was the main cause of the ever evident smog that you see at most major cities.

Id say that this yars is the worst ever, more industry, more cars, more gridlock. Althought many are tying to reduce polution, our society is grownign a too great of a rate. This year in Atlanta we had one day, where the air pl=olution level was right off the chart. Never happened before

It actually spans an eight year period beginning in January, 1993.

HaHaHa. Russ, I thought you would have a serious answer. Didn't know pollution was such a joke to you. Oh wait, you voted for Bush, didn't you? Makes sense now.

Greenhouse gas emitions are going down, or were. Russ's numbers arent too off. Certain types of polution fell dramatically during the 80's, only to see them head back up in the latter 90's. Speculation is varied as to why (some even thing it is cows belching/farting). I believe it is because of increases in the number of cars, and the fact that we are burning more fossil fuels than ever to keep the big fat rides on the roads. OPEC is at maximum, and they still can't meet the US's needs. So you enjoy that ride in that SUV of yours... that vehicle that gets half the mpg it should and produces three times as much pollutants.

But the overal worst was late 60's through 70's. We need to get the trend heading down again. Less polutants mean a healthier population.
