Really? Then here is an eye opening thing for you to try. Take a week and try going around letting people know you are an atheist. I know you are not one, but dont let people know that, just tell them that you have thought about it and decided there is no god. Find out what happens, I dare you.
Odds are almost everyone will turn on you. You will find that your friends either won't believe you, then will be angry at you, and most will finally not want to have anything to do with you at all. Complete strangers will try to convert you, and failing that snub you and refuse you any kindness. Nearly everyone will feel it is safe to insult you to others right in front of your face. Doors will close, and opportunities will dry up.
Then, you will find that something like 10-20% of the people you thought you know will approach you and let you know that they are atheists too, and that if you need some one to lean against until people forget your proclamation of lack of faith, they will be there for you.
And people wonder why we stick together?
I really think that the US is the only western country that this happens in. Here in Iceland religion is no issue, you just believe what you want to believe and people couldn't care less.
